HUNTINGTON — So far, the bridge expansion project on Interstate 64 near Hal Greer Boulevard is going smoothly, the Department of Transportation says.
The westbound bridge heading toward Kentucky has been shut down, and traffic has been diverted to the eastbound bridge through August. Traffic has been reduced to one lane in each direction and flowing well, said Scott Eplin, area supervisor for the West Virginia Division of Highways, District 2.
“Through many tweaks and adjustments, we have not had many complaints, and everything seems to be going smoothly,” Eplin said.
Workers are now demolishing the westbound bridge.
“We’re on schedule with that, and we’re working on the... area that we couldn’t get done until traffic was switched,” Eplin said.
Hal Greer Boulevard was narrowed to one lane from 8 p.m. to 6 p.m. last week as crews demolished portions of the bridge over the roadway. It was a safety precaution for drivers. That project is finished for now, but Hal Greer may again be narrowed to one lane again throughout the summer as the need arises, Eplin said.
This project is the first phase of a four-phase process, he said. The $20.6 million project includes the replacement of existing bridges with dual multi-span bridges.
