Betty Sturgeon of Ona, W.Va., and Howard Sturgeon of Barboursville, W.Va., are announcing the marriage of their daughter, Karin Lea Sturgeon, to Peter Alan Bassett Jr., son of Jane Bassett of Charleston, S.C., and Dr. Peter Alan Bassett Sr. of Phoenix, Ariz.
Karin and Pete exchanged their vows on Sept. 20, 2013, in an outdoor ceremony at 610 Magnolia, Louisville, Ky. Family and close friends gathered to witness the beautiful expressions of love and joy to each other by Karin and Pete.
Given in marriage by her father, the bride's floor length cream silk strapless dress was accented with a narrow sash and trimmed with purple pheasant feathers set with an antique amethyst brooch. Her shoes were by Alexander McQueen. She wore her mother's vintage pearl necklace and earrings, and carried a bouquet of dark purple mini calla lilies, pink roses, orchids and pheasant feathers. Sean Warren, college friend of the groom, officiated the wedding. Attending the bride was her college roommate and best friend, Tracy Grutter of Nashville. Best man was David Son, college friend and law partner of the groom. Usher and seating attendant was Blake Sturgeon, brother of the bride. Memories of growing up on the family horse farm in Ona with her little sister were shared by Yvonne Sturgeon of Laguna Beach, Calif. A reception party was held in the dining room of 610 Magnolia immediately following the ceremony with dinner and dancing to a live band.
Weekend festivities began Thursday, Sept. 19, with the rehearsal dinner hosted by David Son and Kate Kimsey in the beautiful backyard of their home in Louisville. As a bow to Pete's hometown of Charleston, S.C., a bountiful seafood barbecue was enjoyed by guests while being entertained by a slide show of the bride and groom as infants and children up to adulthood. Guests attended races on Saturday, Sept. 21, at Churchill Downs, and wound up the festivities on Sunday with brunch at the Hurstbourne Country Club.
The bride graduated magna cum laude from Milton High School and won an academic scholarship to a college of her choice. She entered the University of Kentucky Honors Program and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. She later joined the Charleston W.Va. Air National Guard, where she became the first ever female pilot from that unit, graduating on the Commodore's List with Distinction. She transferred from Charleston, W.Va., to the Louisville Guard Unit as a C-130 pilot and was deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. Upon her return to Louisville, Karin was hired by UPS Airlines, where she trained on the 747, A-300 and MD-11. She currently flies the MD-11 for UPS on both domestic and international routes out of Louisville.
The groom attended Porter-Gaud Prep School in Charleston, S.C. He graduated from Harvard University, where was a varsity letterman and quarterback for The Crimson. He received his JD degree from Whittier Law School in Costa Mesa, Calif. At the invitation of his friend and college roommate David Son, Pete moved to Louisville and entered private law practice with David. He is a licensed attorney in Kentucky and Arizona, a member of the Louisville Bar Association and the Kentucky Justice Association. He is a member of Hurstbourne Country Club. Pete is an attorney with the Son Law Firm in Louisville.
Karin and Pete had both maintained high standards for choosing their life's mate. They met through a mutual friend and fell in love with each other's independence and outstanding life achievements. After their honeymoon to Hawaii, this exceptional couple will reside in the historic carriage house they have purchased in Louisville.
