Herb and Betty Colker were married Aug. 23, 1942, and are celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary with friends and family at The Greenbrier.
The Colkers met in 1937 at a Cincinnati Opera performance at the Cincinnati Zoo Pavilion. She had been attending the opera since childhood, and he had been a Boy Scout Zoo Guide there for three years at the time.
The couple has a passion for opera, and have been season subscribers to the Cincinnati Opera for more than 40 years. They were featured in the 2012 Cincinnati Opera program, where he wrote, "Betty and I went steady for five years and married in 1942, before I went overseas for two years." The night before he left, they stood up for Rigoletto at the Met in New York, paying $2 each.
Both Herb and Betty are graduates of the University of Cincinnati. When Mr. Colker returned from the war, he and his brother Joe founded W.Va. Electric Supply Company, with headquarters in Huntington, W.Va.
They have four children, Larry, Steven, David and Deborah; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
