Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson), the demonic writer in Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining," convinced pretty much everyone that winter can be a treacherous time. And while his troubles were fictional, real emotional and physical challenges do pile up for most folks, pre- and post-holidays.
"Right now," said Steven Wright, "I'm having amnesia and deja vu at the same time. I think I've forgotten this before." And while it's true that youngsters do forget names, math facts and when Dad said to be home, many folks 50 and older notice that their recall (what year did we go to California?) isn't what it used to be.

Sometimes writers have to straighten out other writers: For example, Samuel Clemens once sent a cable to The Associated Press to correct a faulty story. "Reports of my death," he wrote, "are greatly exaggerated." Well, here are a couple of misleading headlines we feel obliged to straighten out: "Aspirin Linked to Blinding Eye Disease" and "Aspirin Triples Chance of Blindness Disease."
It's estimated that nearly 25 percent of all roadway crashes are caused by drivers using their cell phones to make calls or text. According to the National Safety Council that's about 1.6 million car accidents a year. Of course, there are plenty of other ways drivers are cognitively distracted including eating and drinking, talking to passengers, tending to infants, grooming, using a navigation system or adjusting audio devices. When it comes to distracted driving, the council estimates that distracted drivers can miss up to 50 percent of their driving environment, including stop signs, pedestrians and red lights.
Will Power may hit 225 mph in his Formula 1 Indy car, but that's hardly moving compared with the speed with which weight-loss willpower can vamoose when faced with your favorite cookie or a plate of fried chicken.

Childhood obesity causes health problems for kids while still kids
"Fat Kid Rules the World," a 2012 indie film about hope, change and self-esteem, looks at teen obesity and behavioral problems. But while it's deeply moving, it doesn't show how devastating obesity is to a kid's body -- and not 20 years down the road, but today.
"There is no exercise better for the heart than reaching down and lifting people up," said poet John Albert Holmes. He got that right! Generosity is an essential nutrient. It fuels the body with good energy and strengthens not just relationships, but the heart, immune system and your desire to be good to yourself, too!

There's Chuck, Halle, Walter, Ken and Daryl (Berry, Berry, Berry, Berry and Strawberry, that is!). And while they all pack superpowers as actors or athletes, they can't compete with the amazing health benefits of actual berries -- particularly blueberries and strawberries.

New treatments can ease chronic fatigue for some
Sleeping Beauty recovered from an endless snooze with true love's kiss; Rip Van Winkle woke up after 20 years when (we suspect) he finally shook off his hangover; and Goldilocks was roused from her slumber by Little Bear shouting, "Who's been sleeping in my bed -- and is still there?" But for the estimated 1 million North Americans, mostly women ages 40 to 60, with chronic fatigue syndrome, getting up and going each day isn't so easy!

Robert De Niro, 69, and Sly Stallone, 65, are training for an upcoming boxing film, "Grudge Match," about aging rivals heading back into the ring. Just the idea of those two shirtless in trunks makes us think about the importance of preserving muscle mass as you age. After all, even the fittest athletes lose muscle tone with passing decades.
