Cabell school board approves change order for new school

November 17, 2009 @ 11:05 PM

HUNTINGTON -- The Cabell County Board of Education approved a change order for the Southside Elementary/ Huntington Middle schools project.

The change order required, said Assistant Superintendent over Operations Mike O'Dell, after a visit from the state fire marshal. The approval means the board can spend up to $55,000 in bond money to put caulking on the walls of classrooms in the old section that connects to the new school.

O'Dell said the caulking in expensive, and it's application is labor intensive. He is trying to get a waiver from the fire marshal to use a spray caulking, which is just as effective. But it's cheaper and would require less labor.

Some board members asked O'Dell is he thought any more change orders would be coming. He said that because the facade of the old school has accounted for more than 90 percent of change orders, and it is almost done.
