Camden Park helping out Kellogg Elementary
HUNTINGTON -- Camden Park will give 10 percent of its gate proceeds on Sunday, July 5, to Kellogg Elementary to help the school's bid to purchase new playground equipment.
That day, park goers can also enjoy Bjorn Again, an ABBA cover band. The band plays at 3 and 7 p.m.
Kellogg Elementary also is accepting sponsorships, with 100 percent of the donation going to the playground project. The fundraising group is looking to raise $136,000 to overhaul the playground, said lead organizer and parent Melanie Shafer.
"We're busy this summer writing grants and looking for community playground partners," she said.
In addition to Camden Park, St. Mary's Medical Center, Kenneth Adkins Insurance and Valley Health all have committed to partnerships.
Shafer also said that CSX has agreed to fund all of the fitness stations that will be located along the track. That includes a leg lift, parallel bars, sit up, push up, chin up, stretch squat, back stretch and hamstring stretch.
They have secured about $12,000, she said, and hope to reach the total goal by next spring.
"We are going to fundraise until May of next year and see where we are," she said. "Our goal is to do it all at once. Hopefully, we'll be there."
The playground committee is planning numerous fundraisers throughout the upcoming year, including a large fall festival in October. They also will continue to sell T-shirts with students' names on them, as well as classroom penny drives.
