Schoolchildren lift hearts of veterans

November 09, 2007 @ 11:58 PM

HUNTINGTON -- As Kellogg Elementary second-graders sang "We Are Proud of Our Veterans," tears rolled down the cheeks of the area veterans who attended the assembly held in their honor Friday.

The performance, coordinated by music teacher Stacy Morrison, was the first of what she hopes is an annual salute to veterans. Wayne County Superintendent Gary Adkins, a veteran of the Air Force, said it's right to thank those who have given their lives and years of service to the United States.

"America may not be perfect, but it's as close as it's going to get in this universe," Adkins said. "Whether you believe in this war or not, we have to support our troops."

Steve Mooney, a chief warrant officer in the West Virginia National Guard, attended the assembly to see his niece, Allison Combs, sing. He said the gratitude the school and the students showed was overwhelming.

"I don't think there are any words," Mooney said. "Touching, very touching."

Students at Kenova Elementary also honored veterans on Friday.

Several local veterans and service members attend the Kellogg Elementary Veterans Appreciation Day held in the cafeteria Friday, November 9, 2007.
