Cabell students return to classrooms
After enjoying a couple weeks of summer fun, some Cabell County students will be back in the classroom Tuesday, June 24, as Cabell County Schools begins its summer programs.
Elementary school
Activities for elementary students include a Basic Skills Camp that gives students who have completed kindergarten through fifth grade some extra instruction in reading, language arts and math. It's three hours a day, and kids will be provided lunch free each day.
Basic Skills Camp begins June 24 at Milton (with hours of 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.); Village of Barboursville (8:30 to 11:30 a.m.); and Central City (9:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.), with students attending from various schools throughout the county. It ends on Thursday, July 24.
Students do not attend on Fridays.
Middle school
Cabell County's JumpStart provides middle-schoolers who have completed sixth through eighth grades with a chance to recover credit in reading, language arts and math. Students are identified by their principal and teachers initially by examining the students' grades for the first five grading periods. A final decision on a student's eligibility is verified at the end of the final six-weeks grading period.
JumpStart also runs three hours each day, with students getting free lunch. JumpStart begins on Tuesday, June 24 and ends on Thursday, July 24.
JumpStart will be offered at from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Cabell County Career Technology Center, 1035 Norway Ave.
For more information on the elementary and middle school programs, call Jeff Smith at 304-528-5063.
High school
Cabell County's Summer Extended Time allows high school students to extend the instructional time beyond the 8,100 minutes, giving them additional instruction to master the essential elements of core courses.
Students take a pre-test in the subject area to assess skills and knowledge. The teacher then will design instruction to re-teach missing skills. Students take an exit test on the identified deficiencies.
Classes begin on Tuesday, June 24 and end Tuesday, July 29, and will be conducted in the Alternative School at the Cabell County Schools Central Office.
