Drug testing orientation this week
HUNTINGTON -- Cabell Midland and Huntington high schools will provide orientations for parents and students about the county's new random student drug testing program.
The orientation is mandatory for any student who will drive to school or participate in a sport and has not already been to an orientation or filled out the paperwork.
Huntington High will hold its session at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, and Cabell Midland's is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4.
Parents are strongly encouraged to attend, and parents also must sign the consent form that students must turn in to comply. Parents who do not have students in sports or driving to school can opt their child into the random pool if they wish.
The orientation session will last about 45 minutes and will consist of a review of the Drug Testing Policy, an educational presentation on drug use statistics from Cabell County and an overview of the actual drug testing process.
For more information, contact Todd Alexander, administrative assistant for secondary education, by calling 304- 528-5089.
The test will look for marijuana, cocaine, phencyclidine, opiates, methadone, methamphetamine, amphetamine, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, tricyclic antidepressants and alcohol.
Any positive sample will be subject to confirmation by a second and different test of the same specimen. A first offense will result in the parents or guardians being contacted immediately and a private conference being scheduled. In order for the student to continue participating in the activity or driving to school, he or she must, within five days, show proof that the student has received drug counseling. The student also must submit to a second test within two weeks.
A second offense earns a suspension from the activity for 14 days, and the student will be randomly tested on a monthly basis for the remainder of the year. Third offenses garner suspensions for one calendar year.
The procedure for driving students is similar, but a second-offense means a 90-day suspension of parking privileges. Opt-in students who test positive will be required to meet with administration and their parents and guardians.
