Buffalo student chosen to be part of Macy's parade
BUFFALO, W.Va. -- A Buffalo High School student will be part of the band that leads Santa Claus in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Amanda Young, a student at Buffalo High School in Putnam County, has been selected to represent West Virginia in the 2008 Macy's Great American Marching Band. She will perform with the group during the parade on Nov. 27.
Members of the band, which features 200 students, are chosen for their musical ability and accomplishments. Young, a senior, is currently first in her class and her accomplishments include, the John Philip Sousa Award, National Honor Society, WVU Invitational Honor Band and she has been first chair percussionist in the Region III West Virginia All-Area Band and the Putnam All-County Band the last three years, according to a release from Macy's. She is also a member of the Bison varsity softball and basketball teams, the release said.
"The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is one of the highest honors a high school musician can experience," Buffalo Band Director Mark Hopkins said in the release. "She has worked very hard to earn this opportunity to march with this outstanding group of students from all over the country. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience."
The Buffalo High School Music Boosters are raising money to send Young and her chaperone to the parade.
The cost for airfare, room and board and sightseeing for the weeklong event is $2,500. All money is due by the middle of October. Any money raised above and beyond the cost of the trip will go to support the music program at the school. Those interested in sponsorship can mail donations to: BHS Music Boosters, Macy's Parade Fund, Buffalo High School, 3317 Buffalo Road, Buffalo, WV 25033.
