Huntington High creates Academic Boosters Club
HUNTINGTON -- Huntington High School parents have started an Academic Boosters Club that will encourage students to strive for academic success.
The kickoff meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, in the school's auditorium. There will be a short business meeting followed by a viewing of the documentary "Two Million Minutes."
The group is being organized by parent Patty Steel and has found support with principal Greg Webb, who has given the OK to the Local School Improvement Council to create an academic achievement area to coincide with athletic trophy cases in the school's lobby.
LSIC president Moppy Lavery said in a letter that "we are interesting in improving all aspects of education and the environment of Huntington High. With the ever increasing pressures of competing in the global economy, we realized that we need to continually improve and challenge our students and provide a top-notch 21st century education."
She said that includes a recommendation to offer more advanced placement courses and a long-term process to recruit and retain teachers who are certified and able to teach those classes. As part of that, three new AP classes -- World History, U.S. History and Civic -- were started this year.
She said the LSIC also wants to focus its attention on all the career choices that exist, including those that require a technical education.
"There are numerous career opportunities for students that require more technical training but not a four-year degree," Lavery writes.
She said a lot can be accomplished by the LSIC and new Academic Boosters Club because both are stressing that it's cool to be smart.
"We have to make (students) feel like academics are important," she said. "By having a strong academic background, that makes for a smooth transition to college."
The Academic Boosters Club is open to parents, teachers and community members and has the support of Huntington High's administration. The next meeting after Tuesday night is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7.
