OPEN HOUSE: St. Joseph Central Catholic High School, located at 1300 6th Ave., is holding its annual open house from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8. In addition to various informational tables, there will be a cookout to celebrate the start of a new year.
BLOCK PARTY: St. Joseph Grade School will host its annual block party from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, in the 1300 block of 6th Ave. The event includes food, games, art projects and inflatables. Wristbands and tickets will be sold at the event. For more information, call 304-522-2644.
MERIT SCHOLAR: Spring Valley High School 2008 graduate Lee Rice was awarded the Provost's Gold Scholarship from Baylor University. The scholarship is worth $28,000 to $36,000 for eight semesters. She is among more than 2,500 high school graduates who were selected by Baylor. All the scholarships are awarded on the basis of class rank and/ or SAT/ACT scores.
RECOGNIZED: Huntington native Stephen John Petrany was recently recognized as a member of Sigma Alpha Lambda, National Leadership and Honor Organization at the University of Pittsburgh. Sigma Alpha Lambda is dedicated to promoting and rewarding academic achievement and providing members with opportunities for community service, personal development and lifelong professional fulfillment. Petrany is sophomore political science major at the University of Pittsburgh.
SCHOLARSHIP: Marshall University student and WMUL disc jockey Eric Woods and Huntington Junior College student Leisa Boyd have been awarded the first two Adam Johnson Memorial Scholarships. Johnson, who also was a WMUL disc jockey, died of a drug overdose last year. His father has since begun a strong fight against drugs in Huntington. The money raised for the scholarships, both worth $650, came from The Adam Johnson 5K run for Success, held in March.
ARCH COAL: Nomination forms will soon be reaching schools throughout the state for the Arch Coal Teacher Achievement Awards program. The Arch Coal Foundation, which sponsors the program, has increased the cash award to $3,500 for each of the 12 recipients, who will be announced in the spring.
Nomination forms may be obtained at libraries throughout the state. Public nominations may be made online at www.archteacherawards.com and the West Virginia Education Association Web site, www.wvea.org. In addition, the West Virginia Education Association's foundation, the West Virginia Foundation for the Improvement of Education, awards a $1,000 grant for use with at-risk students to each public school recipient's school. Nominations close Jan. 9.
SCHOLARSHIP: Kenova resident Garrett McCormick has been awarded the West Virginia GED/EDP Scholarship to attend Marshall University this fall. It is renewable for the spring semester if he maintains a 2.0 grade point average.
The scholarship is sponsored by Sen. H. Truman Chafin, West Virginia's Senate majority leader, in honor of his late father, Tom C. Chafin, who was a former sheriff of Mingo County.
Chafin awards the scholarship each year to a student in his Sixth Senatorial District comprised of Wayne, Mingo, McDowell, Mercer and Wyoming counties in Southern West Virginia.
