HUNTINGTON -- Orkin staff members were at the Cabell County Public Library Tuesday morning -- not to kill an infestation, but to educate children on bugs.
The Feeling Buggy program featured service manager Phyllis Justice and office manager Mary Summerfield from the Huntington Orkin office. They talked to a group of 10 children about which bugs are poisonous, which bugs they might find locally and how to carefully pick up a bug.
They also passed around a set of goggles that allow the kids to see what spiders and flies see, which is the same image multiplied dozens of times.
"Most kids are really excited about insects," Summerfield said. "And they love stories about bugs."
Carolyn Cummings brought her two grandsons, Jake and Daniel Maue. She said interactive programs really hold their attention because they like to learn.
"They're so curious," Cummings said. "It's amazing at what they learn and absorb."
Each of the kids got a bag filled with goodies, including a booklet with facts, a maze and an area to draw a favorite bug. They also got little rubbery bugs, which the kids couldn't seem to put down.
Cummings said Jake, who is 3, has been mesmerized by cicadas. She said he has picked them up in an almost fearless manner.
"He still tries to find them," she said.
Justice told the children that it's important to wear long pants and sleeves in wooded areas because some bugs can bite. One little girl said it's so you don't catch bug germs.
The library, both the main and county branches, hosts programs throughout the summer. Other programs include magic with Dr. Mirage, Lego Lady, Poetry Alive!, story hours, Water and the Environment and craft projects sponsored by the Huntington Museum.
