Cabell art teacher gets book published
HUNTINGTON -- Marisa Main didn't write her master's thesis with the intention of getting it published. But seven years after she completed "The Language of Art: A Conversation Between Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso," it is now a scientific journal that is available on more than a dozen online book vending Web sites, including Amazon.com.
"It was exciting," Main said of being contacted by German publisher VDM Verlag Dr. Müller. "It seemed to give a little bit more validity to the art field for me personally."
Main's book is a comparative analysis between the two artists. She said Matisse and Picasso were rivals and later friends who played off each other's works. The book also includes sketches of both artists' works, done by Main. She said she had originally wanted to include original copies of work by Matisse and Picasso, but when her adviser told her that the thesis would be published online, she found that obtaining copyrights was going to be difficult. In the end, though, she said doing her own sketches probably helped her do a better job.
"It made it more personal," Main said. "When they are black and white, it keeps you focused on the elements."
Main was born in Alaska. Her father was in the Air Force, and her mother, it turns out, was a painter. She credits her mom for her creative genes, but said it was her father who passed on the ability to articulate with words.
Eventually, her family moved to Hamlin, where her mom had grown up. Main graduated from Hamlin High School, then earned her art education degree from Marshall University in 1986.
After going back to school in 1998 and earning her master's degree in 2001, Main started teaching in Cabell County. She spent two years at Village of Barboursville and two years at Nichols elementary schools before teaching at Marshall for a year. She also has been an adjunct teacher at Marshall for seven years.
She came back on staff as a long-term sub at Milton Middle School this year but has accepted a position to teach art at Huntington Middle next year.
Teaching has been very important to Main because it opened the opportunity for her to start writing for "SchoolArts Magazine," a national publication designed for art teachers. When she was at Nichols, she had a blind student and wasn't sure how to teach her to do visual arts.
Main said she couldn't find any research, so she devised a lesson plan comprised of several methods. She even had the rest of her students spend a class period blindfolded so they could understand how she was learning.
"I did a diversity awareness lesson," she said. "We did a video and a write-up. It became a Cabell County Schools workshop."
She submitted her article to the magazine, and she's been a frequent writer since.
Main also finds time to create art. In fact, her home is full of her works. But many, she said, have been given away to family members as gifts. She doesn't sell anything, and she's never had a public show. In the future, she'd like to display her works publicly, continue teaching and continue writing.
