The Chesapeake Band Boosters will hold their first community rummage sale and flea market in the parking lot between the middle and high school, which is located at 10181 County Road One. The event will be held on Saturday, July 5.

Students recognized for American history essays
Two Barboursville Middle School students were recognized for the American history essays they submitted to the Barboursville Chapter of National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. After they won first place for their grade level in the local chapter contest, the essays were sent to the state competition, where Haley Curry won third place for sixth grade and Stuart Adkins won first place for seventh grade. Adkins' essay was forwarded to the multi-state division contest, which consisted of West Virginia, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana and Illinois, and won first place there as well. His essay is now at the national level. The students researched and wrote their essays about espionage during the American Revolution.
Lincoln County graduate chosen as 2008 Arch Coal Scholar
Lincoln County High School graduate Hannah Hager was one of 11 seniors in the state be chosen as a 2008 Arch Coal Scholar. The program honors outstanding achievement by the children of employees of Arch Coal and its subsidiaries. Each scholar will receive a $1,500 scholarship.
Hager is the daughter of Philip and Leah Hager. She plans to attend Marshall University and major in biology.
Students display science fair projects at Gifted Program picnic
The Wayne County Gifted Program held its annual picnic at Ceredo-Kenova Middle School on Friday, May 23, where students displayed their science fair projects. Students also were awarded prizes from areas businesses, including Camden Park, Cold Stone, Dairy Queen and Marquee Cinemas.
Winners included: first place, Autumn Booten, sixth grade, Wayne Middle; second place, Ben Thompson, fourth grade, Wayne Elementary; third place, Shelby Wellman, fourth grade, Prichard Elementary; third place, Micheal Moon, second grade, Wayne Elementary.
Christian rock band wins talent contest
ONE WAY, a Christian rock band consisting of Justin Hesson, Drew Edwards and Danny Grass, won this year's Barboursville Middle School talent contest. They beat out 11 other acts to earn the $100 prize.
Spring Valley awarded for activities to increase seat belt usage
The Spring Valley Safe and Drug Free Schools organization was awarded a $250 check from the Battle of the Belts Campaign. The campaign was organized by Larry Kendall, traffic safety director for the Governor's Safe Traffic Operations Program.
Students, under the supervision of site coordinator Sally Davenport, conducted activities throughout April and May to increase seat belt usage among students and staff.
Students earn Dean's List status for academic achievement
Logan Wills of Chesapeake was named to the Dean's List at Wheeling Jesuit University for the spring semester. In addition, Wills has been accepted to study abroad this fall at the Beijing Center in China. He is one of 120 college students nationwide who were accepted into the program. He is the son of John Wills of Huntington and Diane and Donald Bowsher of Chesapeake. He is a 2006 graduate of Chesapeake High School.
Cabell County residents Danya Hammond and Katherine Justice earned spots on the Dean's List at Fairmont State University.
Huntington residents Whitney Adkins, Dennis Cole, Leslie Cummings, Virginia Foard, Haley Maynard and Meghan Taylor; Milton residents Holly Smith and Rickard Jones; Barboursville resident Thomas Foster; and Fort Gay resident Larry Robinett all earned spots on the Dean's List at West Virginia Wesleyan College for the spring semester. Cummings, Foster, Jones and Smith also graduated.
Joy Amber Mayenchein, daughter of Harry and Janet Mayenchein of Chesapeake, earned a spot on the Dean's List at Georgetown College, located in Georgetown, Ky. Georgetown College is a four-year, private, residential, liberal arts college that teaches students to think, to lead, and to serve with balance and respect as demonstrated and modeled by Christian character.
Ona resident Brian S. Clagg earned a place on the Provost's List at Potomac State College of West Virginia University for the spring semester.
Elizabeth Anne Baldwin, daughter of Gary and Neva Baldwin of Huntington, has been named to the President's List for the 2008 spring semester at Elon University, located in Elon, N.C. The President's List is composed of students with no grade below an A-minus in a minimum of 12 semester hours.
Jacob Aaron Bell of Proctorville and Ethan Daniel Shultz of Leon, W. Va., earned spots on the Dean's List at The University of Northwestern Ohio. Each earned a grade point average of 3.5 or above in order to be named to the list.
