SCHOLARSHIP: Carrie Mitchell of Huntington and Derek Vance of Poca were among six West Virginia students who earned a $5,000 scholarship from the Verizon Foundation. They were eligible as children of parents who work for Verizon. The scholarship is an annual gift worth up to $20,000.

The Barboursville Lions Club awarded two $1,000 scholarships to Cabell Midland graduates Carissa Dawn Baylous and Summer Elder. Baylous, daughter of Randy and Alice Baylous, received the John T. Fife scholarship. Elder, daughter of David and Cathie Elder, received the Willis Hertig/Claude Thornburg scholarship. The two were among 25 applicants for the scholarships.

Huntington student Madison Morris was named a scholarship winner of the Kohl's Kids Who Care Scholarship Program. Morris, along with 14 other West Virginia teens, earned $50 gift cards and were entered for a chance to win a $1,000 scholarship. The winner will be named in July.

Huntington High senior Mickey Farley is the first recipient of the Spirit of the Highlander Award, which is given in honor of 2007 graduate Christopher Withers, who died in an automobile accident returning from a senior trip last June. Farley was a long-time friend of Withers and was involved in many student activities. On his application, he indicated that $1,000 scholarship would be used at Marshall University.

Kim Fisher of Milton, a junior animal and poultry sciences major at Virginia Tech's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, was awarded the Mary Howe diZerega Memorial Scholarship from the Department of Animal and Poultry Sciences.
