Achievements & Announcements
WINNERS: Blazer High School won three awards at the 2008 Student Technology Leadership Program State Championship, held at Rupp Arena in Lexington in early May. The school won second place in animation, while Jacob Yates was second place for original music and Jamie Leistner won as an engineer. Ashland Independent Schools won the Distinct Platinum Award.
GRADUATED: Kathleen Fontaine Murray of Huntington was among 79 graduates of the Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine. She received a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree May 9.
Shane David Michael Hall, the son of Eva and David Hall of Huntington, graduated from the College of Charleston in Charleston, S.C. on May 10. He received a degree in Historic Preservation and Art History. He is currently employed by The Historic Charleston Foundation.
Christine M. Prelaz, daughter of Edward and Anita Prelaz of Huntington, was awarded a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from the University of Kentucky College of Health Sciences at the commencement ceremony held May 4.
Huntington resident Sarah Clagg graduated from Ohio University's College of Health and Human Services with a doctor of physical therapy degree on June 13. Clagg is a 2001 graduate of Clear Fork High School in Bellville, Ohio.
HONORED: The Cabell County Career Technology Center held its annual assembly for adult and high school students who completed course requirements. The students have invested 600 to 1,200 hours of instruction and have met all the standards for their programs.
The adult students are: Whitney Baker, Robin Bevans, Joseph Brown, Jason Conner, Eric Lee Cox, Darien Eagon, Chris Evans, Maurice Ewing, Misty Gibson, Peizhu Jie, Lu Jin, Matthew Kitchens, William Knight, Jennifer Mollett, Andrew Moore, Robert Niebur, Jasmine Parrott, Pamella Parrott, Kathleen Plybon, Christopher Wamsley, Edward Lee Watts.
The high school students are: Courtland Bailey, Travis Bailey, Andrew Bates, Anse Blake, Shane Brotherton, Terry Burton, James Chapman, Lester Counts, Ronald Dean, Michael Gibbs, Jon Harris, Michael Honaker, Joseph Lawhon, Brandon McCoy, Zachary Miller, Jameila Misherghi, Casey Monge, Shaine Obsorn, Travis Reeves, Alex Richardson, Nicholas Robinson, Vickie Scarberry, Marsha Short, Zachary Smith, Michael Sowards, Caleb Stevens, Shawn Stevens, Michael Woods, Jacob Woolum.
Crystal Cook, Rebekah Kline and Edward Watts also were recognized for their completion at the West Virginia Skills USA competition. And Nicholas Robinson was presented the Student of the Year award.
MATH & SCIENCE: The Governor's School for Math and Science released the names of the students chosen to attend the school this summer at West Virginia University and Greenbank Observatory in Pocahontas County. Those students from Cabell County include: Danae Bass, Xiaofeng Jie, Kaitlyn McPherson and Benjamin Morris.
Nathan Hannum represents Mason County. Sydney Chapman and Asia Salmans represents Mingo County. Jacob Houdyschell, Dalton Thompson and Diana Ventura represent Wayne Count. Sequoya Bua-lam, Ali El-Khatib, Kathleen Lago and Sylvia Zhang represent Putnam County.
GOOD CITIZENS: Numerous Cabell County students were named the recipients of the Good Citizen awards, given by the Buford Chapter National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Each student received a medal and certificate.
The students are: Erma Lafferre and Jacob Jarvis, Beverly Hills Middle School; Emily Miles and Dakota Render, Enslow Middle School; Kira Corns and Barry Westmoreland, Huntington Middle School; A.J. Childers, Nathan Welch, Vanessa LeMaster, Cody Houchin, Megan Willis, Jacob Hardin and Jacob Kilder, Grace Christian School.
