Schools in Cabell County welcome new teachers, staff
HUNTINGTON -- Cabell County's newest teachers spent Wednesday morning meeting central office staff and going over the board policies and procedures.
But most of the 44 new hires were ready to get into the classrooms and get the year started.
"I'm pretty excited to start; just anxious," said Curtis Mann, who will be teaching seventh grade math at Milton Middle School. "I just want to try to relate to the students and try to find a way to make math appealing to them."
Mann, who graduated from Marshall in May, did his student teaching at Beverly Hills Middle School in the spring and feels ready to make the transition to lead teacher.
"I've always been real involved with kids," Mann said. "I've worked in a lot of organizations with youth, and I thought I could make a difference. I want to give (my students) the best education possible and try to make them as successful as possible later in life."
The new teachers and service personnel were introduced to the insurance and benefits plan, technology accounts, student attendance issues, curriculum and assessments and general legal issues.
"We just want to give them a basic understanding of what it's like to teach and work in Cabell County," said Director of Communication Jedd Flowers, who spoke to the new group about sharing good news with media, parents and the community. "Frankly, (the orientation) is to welcome and encourage them."
Janna Goodson said she was trying to line up a long-term substitute position when she received a phone call from school officials Tuesday night offering her a fifth-grade teaching job at Spring Hill Elementary.
"It was a very good phone call," said Goodson, who graduated from Marshall in December of 2005 and did her student teaching at Spring Hill that fall. "I've got three days to get in and get my room ready."
The McDowell County native taught at Southside Elementary last year as a long-term sub. She taught previously in Kanawha County and is ready to settle in Cabell.
"I just like the area," she said. "It feels great to have a job here."
