Cabell Midland band biggest in school's history
ONA -- Cabell Midland High School's marching band is raising the bar this year.
Director Rhonda Smalley said the band has more students than Cabell Midland's had in its 15-year history with at total of 150 marching members. And she just felt it was time to choose a more difficult lineup for this year's show, deciding upon "Knightmare in a Darkened Theater," songs by Danny Elfman.
The show includes music from "Spider Man," "Tales From the Crypt," "Nightmare Before Christmas," "Edward Scissorhands" and "Beetlejuice."
"The potential is for a higher-achieving band, but you have to take into account that those (40 freshmen) need to learn the system," Smalley said.
But after four weeks of practice, drum major Courtney Miles said the band looks sharp and is ready for Friday night's opening football game against Parkersburg High.
"It's pretty amazing to see where we were the first day of band camp to where we are today," the junior said. "I feel like this is going to be one of our best years."
Senior drum captain Tyler Stewart hopes so. With his last year on the horizon, he said it's important for him to have a good time and do the best job he can.
"(Band camp) feels a little different than usual," Stewart said. "It's the last year (I am) going to be in the band. Once I got to the last week of camp, I was like 'I'm gonna enjoy it.' "
He said there are a lot of expectations this year, even with a large freshman class. But with all the work everyone's put in, he's anxious to see how good the band will be in the spring.
"By the time you get to the end of the year, we're probably going to be pretty good," Stewart said. "But we're still in the building process right now."
The marching band competition schedule includes James Monroe High School, Saturday, Sept. 13; Spring Valley High School, Saturday, Sept. 20; Huntington High School (a.m.) and Cabell Midland (p.m.), Saturday, Oct. 4; Black Walnut Festival, Saturday, Oct. 11; Herbert Hoover High School, Saturday, Oct. 25; and the Marshall University Tri-State Marching Band Competition, Saturday, Nov. 1.
The band also will participate in the Sept. 18 Fallfest Parade in Barboursville and Marshall's Homecoming Parade on Nov. 15.
