New school year brings exciting changes for Wayne County
Approximately 8,000 students will return to their classrooms throughout the 21 schools in Wayne County on Aug. 26. On behalf of the Wayne County Board of Education, I am pleased to welcome back all of our students for the 2008-2009 school year.
As superintendent of Wayne County Schools, I have pledged to embrace the changes necessary to prepare the students of Wayne County for the 21st century.
While Wayne County Schools offer many learning opportunities for students, some of the most exciting changes and opportunities are: dual credit courses offered in conjunction with Marshall University; EDGE courses; numerous Career and Technical course offerings; Quest Program; Tech Steps; installation of a new county-wide security system; Project Based Learning; Marshall University's June Harless 21st Century Learning Demonstration Site at Kellogg Elementary and Vinson Middle; improved videoconferencing and distance learning capabilities; technology integration specialists; and the addition of parent coordinators at every school.
The schools in Wayne County have experienced many successes in the last year, and I am excited about the many opportunities for our students in the coming year. Eleven of the 21 Wayne County schools have been recognized as West Virginia Schools of Excellence. All 21 schools have received full accreditation. Six schools have been recognized by the Office of Education Performance Audits as West Virginia Exemplary Schools.
Public education is in a state of unprecedented change around the world. After ensuring the safety of our students, equipping them with the skills necessary to be competitive in a global society is our primary focus. Vinson Middle School is going to be the model middle school for 21st century learning in West Virginia.
During the summer, parent volunteers, students, staff members and others in the community worked extensively on various projects. This project is being promoted by the Harless Center for Rural Educational Research and Development in cooperation with the Wayne County Board of Education.
Technology is an important tool that enhances communication in the educational process. Currently, 10 additional smartboards are being installed at Vinson Middle School, expanding the availability of technology based instructional tools. Like technology, community support is an essential element in the success of Wayne County schools.
In closing, I would like to invite everyone to visit the Wayne County Board of Education Web site, http://boe.wayn.k12.wv.us. The Web site is designed to help you stay informed about what is happening in Wayne County schools. In order for the children of Wayne County to achieve their full potential, there must be a partnership of the schools, parents, and community. I am proud to have the opportunity to continue serving as superintendent of this outstanding school system.
