Board of Education to meet to discuss property options
HUNTINGTON -- The Cabell County Board of Education will meet at 6:30 p.m. today to discuss and possibly decide upon which of the three locations it prefers for a new middle school.
The properties recommended by the site selection committee include Veterans Memorial Field House in Huntington, land owned by Cabell County Schools beside the Cabell County Career Technology Center, and University Heights Apartments, owned by Marshall University.
University Heights garnered the highest score from committee members, but it came to light last week that the property is being heavily pursued by Prestera Center. A public hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday in the Alumni Lounge of the Memorial Student Center on Marshall's campus. If the school board decides it wants the property, it must submit a proposal and bid to the university, said spokesperson Bill Bissett.
Bissett said because Marshall University is a public institution, the process of selling land requires a closed bid. The highest bidder, he said, gets the deal.
According to the public notice printed in Thursday's edition of The Herald-Dispatch, Marshall is seeking a minimum of $1.7 million for the 12.8-acre parcel that is now home to three apartment buildings used primarily for non-traditional graduate students, a small two-story house and the former West Virginia Colored Children's Home. The three-story building with large white columns was put on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998, according to university officials.
Tim Morris, Prestera Center's director of corporate development and marketing, said the buildings would be used to house its addiction recovery center, now located in the West End of Huntington. Morris said those details also will be discussed at Friday's public hearing.
