GRAND OPENING: The new Martha Elementary will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony and an open house of the school at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28. The ceremony will take place at the entrance of the new school, located at 3067 Martha Road, Barboursville.
DEAN'S LIST: Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, announced its spring 2008 Dean's List. It includes, from Cabell County: Elizabeth Anne Simmons, Anne Louise Steel, Kyoung Joo Jin, Jennifer Anne Lynch and Sarah Elizabeth Stamm. From Putnam County: Stuart Geoffrey Thomas.
Two students also graduated in Miami University's spring commencement. They are: Mark Russell Simmons, Cabell County, and Lauren Nicole Dickerson, Putnam County.
REPRESENTATIVE: Emily Bechelhimer, a 2008 graduate of Cabell Midland High School, was selected to represent West Virginia at the National Youth Science Camp from June 29 to July 26. Beckelhimer joined 115 other top science students from across the nation and around the world for this acclaimed leadership program.
Now in its 45th year, the NYSC is a four-week all-expense-paid program created to honor and encourage future science leaders. The camp is located in the rustic setting of the Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia.
Delegates did various activities including hiking, kayaking, caving, mountain biking and rock climbing. As part of a three-day tour of the nation's capital, delegates met with many lawmakers at the Senate luncheon hosted by Sen. Robert C. Byrd, D-W.Va.
