AFT-WV wins national award
CHARLESTON -- American Federation of Teachers-West Virginia was honored by the national affiliate for its membership growth during the 2008-2009 academic year.
AFT-WV had the highest percentage of growth in the nation among AFT state federations. The organization also was honored with a second-place award for its increase in the percentage of newly Schartered locals and more than 8,500 membership increase.
"The real significance of the award is that we now have over 15,000 education employees who are working in unison for better schools, higher standards and more opportunities for our students," said Judy Hale, president of AFT-WV. "We all win when this occurs."
AFT-WV represents over 15,000 education employees and is the largest union in the state. Nationally, the AFT represents 1.4 million Pre-K through 12th-grade teachers, paraprofessionals and other school support employees, higher education faculty and classified staff, nurses and other health care workers, and state and local government employees.
