Friday's Community News: Joyce Spencer
IN THE "DARK KNIGHT": Joshua Denver Harto, son of former Barboursville resident and 1970 Barboursville High School graduate Beverly Holley, has a large supporting role in the new Batman movie, "The Dark Knight." Joshua is the grandson of Denver Holley of South Point, Ohio, and the late Margie Holley of Barboursville. He is a 1997 graduate of Palm Beach County School of the Arts, West Palm Beach, Fla. He and his fiancée, Liz Garcia, are writing a new TV pilot for TNT. Joshua will also be starring in a new independent film, "1% More Humid," written and directed by Liz. Joshua and Liz are currently living in Los Angeles.
REUNION: Another great family/friends reunion was held over the 4th of July weekend at the home of Vince and Brenda Keys in Barboursville. More than 100 people were there to enjoy good food, games and visiting with each other. Jake and Elizabeth Keys and their children, Josh and Elliott, were in town from Greensboro, N.C. Jake, a 1991 graduate of Barboursville High School, is the corporate communication manager of Diamler-Chrysler North America, headquartered in Greensboro. Josh stayed with his grandparents for the week to visit with his aunt, Annie Keys, and cousins, Harper and Merritt True and Derek and Carolyn Ball.
FARMERS MARKET: Get up early Saturday and buy some fresh vegetables at the farmers' market held on Depot Street, Barboursville. Hours for the market are 7 to 11 a.m.
FORE: Seventy-nine-year-old Jimmy Adkins had a great game of golf recently when he shot a 73 at the Riviera Golf and Country Club.
RETIREMENT: Congratulations to Joan Gue of Barboursville who retired the first of July from the Cabell County Board of Education. Joan worked for 27 years as a secretary and auditor/accountant. She is a 1966 graduate of Barboursville High School and has an associate degree from Marshall University and a bachelor of arts degree from Mountain State University. She plans to have lots of time for her photography hobby and to catch up on some good reading.
GOLF SCRAMBLE: Get those golf clubs ready for the Barboursville Lions Club's annual charity golf scramble to be held Aug. 2 at Orchard Hills Golf and Country Club. Entry fee is $200 per team which includes green fees, cart, post tournament dinner and refreshments along the course. ICE CREAM SOCIAL: Enjoy an ice cream social beginning at 4 p.m. Saturday at the home of Eddie and Debbie Dillon on Big Fudges Creek, Ona. Swimming, cake walks, pony rides, food and games, a carnival, and a gospel sing will be available. This is a fundraiser for a new church sponsored by the ladies fellowship of Susannah Baptist Church. In case of rain, the social will be held at the church.
RUMMAGE SALE: A rummage sale will be held soon to financially support a trip to Tennessee for the residents of the Barboursville Veterans Home. Anyone who would like to donate items for the sale may call Debbie Thacker, 304-736-1027, ext. 329, by July 25. Leave a message if you need items picked up.
SALE: The Barnett Childcare Center, 1524 10th Ave., is hosting a sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and July 26. Classroom furniture, toys, computers, electronics, washer and dryer, copier, printers, office equipment, furniture, playground equipment and fixtures will be sold to defray Barnett Childcare Center obligations.
