WRITERS: They're poets and don't know it -- the truth is four local women are outstanding writers, and they know it. More than 900 entries were recently submitted by writers from several states for the 30th annual West Virginia Writers' Association conference at Cedar Lakes Conference Center, Ripley. Cabell County authors recognized for outstanding work were Carol Brodtrick, first place, children's book category, for "Cat;" Llewellyn McKernan, third place, long poetry division, for "Turning Over a New Leaf;" Kelly Renee Broce, third, emerging writers poetry category, for "What I Know of Nanking," and Susan Nicholas, first place, peoples choice division with children's story, "The Suit."
CALL: Carrie Swayne, West Virginia Wesleyan College junior, explores her call to ordained ministry by interning at Kenova United Methodist Church. Carrie, music education major from Keyser, W.Va., serves as part of a 10-week Summer Intern Program of West Virginia Conference Board of Ordained Ministry and a resource to District camps.
MILITARY: Army National Guard Sgt. Jeffrey P. McClure Jr. has been mobilized and activated at Fort McCoy, near Sparta, Wis., for deployment to an overseas forward operating base supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. Jeffrey, combat engineer with 201st Engineer Battalion in Ashland, Ky., has served in military for seven years. Jeffrey, nephew of Sheila Brizendine of Willow Wood, Ohio, is married to Angela, daughter of Christine C. Wilcox of Ashland.
