Tuesday's Community News: Brenda Lucas
WISH: Ever wish upon a star? I have -- actually not on a star, though. When I heard Jim's Steak and Spaghetti House was celebrating its 70th anniversary of serving the Huntington community with its famous spaghetti sauce, other wonderful food and ambiance, I couldn't help but wish that the late Jim Tweel could have lived in good health and mind to be a part of this milestone celebration. My mind went back to the hundreds of times I entered the restaurant to find this fine gentleman dressed in a white shirt and tie, greeting and meeting folks during the lunch-hour rush. I must say that daughter, Jimmie Carder, wife, Sally, other family members and helpers have done an excellent job keeping the name and restaurant alive and for this, the late Mr. Tweel would be thrilled.
INTERN: Her time may be drawing to a close, but Jennifer Crittendon served as youth intern at Kenova United Methodist Church during June and July to help with her call into the ministry. She helped staff a youth mission trip, direct the Western District senior high camp at Asbury Woods and lead the Summer Serve program.
MEET: Gather with folks of the Tri-State Chapter of West Virginia Native Plant Society at Jenkins Plantation House on W.Va. 2 at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 26, for a field trip exploring the Greenbottom Wildlife Management Area. Those joining the group should bring water, sunscreen, insect repellent, head covering, change of foot covering, field guides, cameras, binoculars and snacks.
MILITARY: Army National Guard Spec. Walter E. Zimmerman has been mobilized and activated at Fort McCoy, near Sparta, Wis., for deployment to an overseas forward operating base to support the mission of Operation Enduring Freedom. Walter, combat engineer with 206th Engineer Battalion in Tomah, Wis., has served in the military for six years. The 2002 grad of Prestonsburg High is the son of Lorrie A. Howard and stepson of Nicky Howard, both of Prestonsburg. His wife, Kayla, is daughter of Jim Goble and Kathy Goble, both of East Point, Ky.
HAT: It's been many hats for Suzi Brodof, and recently, she was named to wear another one -- executive director of River Valley Child Development Services. The Cleveland, Ohio, native graduated from Huntington High and the University of Missouri and received a master's degree in elementary education from the University of Louisville. In 1991, she joined the organization as director of the Norma Gray Early Learning Center. She was promoted to state coordinator of Apprenticeship for Child Development Specialist program in 2000. It's a known fact Suzi will wear the hat well. Her office is located at 611 7th Ave. Call 304-523-3417.
HOP ON: About 10 seats remain for a bus trip on Sept. 6 for Longaberger Homestead and Dresden to celebrate Heritage Days. The cost is $50, which includes a Grandma Bonnie pie plate, breakfast and drinks. Games and prizes are also offered. Bus money is due by Aug. 5.
