Saturday's Community News: Brenda Lucas
HERO: Jonathan Ross of Barboursville, may be the youngest man to be named WSAZ-TV's Hometown Hero. The 10-year-old received the surprise award while attending a children's program at his church, Huntington's First Presbyterian Church. Tony Cavalier presented the award to Jonathan for his fundraising efforts benefiting his church's mission work in Peru.
Jonathan is too young to go to Peru but he created a cookbook with recipes from "famous" people. So far, he has sold more than 150 cookbooks, totaling nearly $3,000. Jonathan, you are a hometown hero.
SPREE: Krista Keeney, Ohio University Southern student, recently won a shopping spree at Manhattan's Steve & Barry's in New York City with Amanda Bynes, who starred in "Hairspray" and "Sydney White." Krista, 21, is daughter of Terry Keeney and Colleen Keeney. She discovered the "Dear Girl" contest from boyfriend, Justin Hawthorne, and submitted an essay why she thought she was the ultimate "Dear" girl. The spree was featured n the February issue of "CosmoGIRL."
BOOKS: Ohio River Festival of Books is offered from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Big Sandy Superstore Arena's Conference Center. A few authors will be on hand to sign copies, including Bob Withers, John Becker, Adam M. Dean, Linda Jitmoud and others.
FUNDRAISER: Junior League of Huntington sponsors a Monte Carlo night from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday, March 14, at 617 9th Ave. The $50 tickets include cocktails, food and casino. A Texas Hold 'em Polar Tournament also is played with a grand prize. Entry fee is $25. Call (304) 525-0676 or (304) 522-1149.
PERFECT: Sam Shideler is the only West Virginia student to score a perfect 36 on the ACT college entrance test. Sam, son of Steve and Michelle Shideler, is a junior at Huntington High and volunteers at the Cabell County Public Library. He plans to attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Fall 2009 to earn bachelor and master's degrees and teach math in high school or college. Sam is also youth group president at Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church. Let's hear a round of applause for Sam.

CHUCKLE: A girl calls her boyfriend to help with a killer jigsaw puzzle. "What will it be?" he asked. She said, "According to the picture on the box, it's a rooster." He decides to help. After letting him in, she takes him to where the puzzle is spread on the table. After studying the pieces, he looks at the box and says, "First, no matter what we do, we can't assemble these pieces into anything resembling a rooster." Taking her hand, he says, "Second, I want you to relax. Let's have a nice cup of tea and then ..." he said with a deep sigh ... "Let's put the Corn Flakes back in the box."
