LIFE
'Sesame Street Live!' coming to Huntington
HUNTINGTON -- This weekend, everybody's favorite "Street" is a little closer to home.
The longest running touring show for children in history, "Sesame Street Live!" is bringing Elmo, Zoe, Big Bird and all their "Sesame Street" friends to the Big Sandy Superstore Arena in four performances on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
"Elmo Makes Music" teaches children and parents alike that almost anything can be a musical instrument. When Jenny, an enthusiastic new music teacher arrives on Sesame Street only to discover that her instruments are missing, the Muppets come to the rescue and employ rubber duckies, trash can lids and even cookie jars in their quest to make music.
Showtimes are 7 p.m. Friday, 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday.
The 2007-08 season marks the 28th year Sesame Street has toured, with more than 50 million children and their parents enjoying the productions. Each tour features a multi-million dollar show with Broadway-caliber scripts, music composition, set design and construction, lighting and costumes. As the Long Beach Herald said recently, "Kids are really just an excuse to go."
"It's been around so long because it's the highest-quality production. Parents were familiar with "Sesame Street" themselves and now they're bringing their kids out so they can experience the whole thing as a family," said Janice Miuccio, who performs as Oscar's love interest "Grundgetta" and as an understudy for numerous tour roles. She previously worked on "Super Grover! Ready for Action" and worked at Sesame Place in her native Pennsylvania. "Parents know it's always going to be wholesome, and kids just know they're having a great time."
As the "Sesame Street" crew rolls into town, they bring with them two 48-foot semitrailers for transporting scenery and costumes, two miles of cable to run the lighting and sound systems and a typical tour cast size of 28 people, including 17 performers, eight crew members, managers and a director. Each tour logs nearly 20,000 miles in a given season, performing more than 300 shows. For Miuccio, generating a fresh show each time can sometimes be a challenge.
"Doing the same show week after week may get repetitive, but knowing that the audience is seeing it for the first time keeps it exciting and keeps me going," she explained.
Miuccio grew up dancing and even knew a few performers in previous "Sesame Street Live" productions.
"I loved the idea of traveling the country and dancing every weekend, so I auditioned," she said. "It's really rewarding to work with the kids and getting to see their faces when they see their 'celebrities.' "
This weekend's show features two acts and musical numbers such as "People in Your Neighborhood," "Music is Everything to Me," "Cookie's Gift," "Honk, Bang, Whistle and Crash" and "Jenny's Surprise." Parents will love songs such as "The Hustle" and "Rockin' Robin" and the classics they remember from their childhood.
Children will learn about patience, acceptance and teamwork from the stage show.
"It's just a great family show all the way around," said Miuccio, who dons trash in her hair to get "in character."
Admission prices are $12 and $15, with a limited number of $18 premium seats and $22 Gold Circle seats available. All opening night seats are $12.
