GRADS: Three women from Enslow Park Presbyterian Church get a round of applause for their graduation efforts. Logan Mackall Clark, daughter of Paul and Belinda Clark, graduates from Huntington High and is enrolled on a Presidential Academic Scholarship for the fall semester at Georgetown College in Kentucky, where plans to major in biology and play varsity basketball. Sally Elizabeth Edwards, daughter of Kathy and Ben Edwards, graduates from the University of Kentucky with honors and a bachelor of science degree in biological sciences. She plans to pursue a master of science degree in biological sciences at Marshall University this fall. Deborah "Debbie" G. Somuano, daughter of Deborah Somuano, also graduates from Huntington High. She plans to major in psychology at Marshall University.
BABY: Congratulations to Clinton and Kerri Smith on the birth of their little one April 7. Corbin Leslie weighed in at 8 pounds and 6.5 ounces. He is the grandson of Danny and Lisa Cornwell, big brother to Kohde and great-grandson of Don Cornwell. May this bundle of boy bring much love and happiness to the family.
TRAVELERS: Wayne County seniors recently traveled by Wayne County X-Press buses to Charleston to speak their concerns to the W.Va. Legislature. Attending were Margaret Sperry, Thomas Martin, Faye Thompson, William Jarrell, Irene Jerrell, Jane Copley, Ruth Williamson, Herb Muncy, Lynette Chaffin, Texanne Brown and Wilma Hilton. Helping arrange the trip were Wayne County Community Services Organization staff, including Rose Meredith, executive director; DeDe Ross, associate director; Linda Blamer, personnel/aging program specialist; Kevin Marcum, CSA-Bison Center; Dennis Pauley and Al Price, bus drivers.
WISHES: How great to hear that Mary Diamond of Ironton, Ohio, recovers from recent heart surgery at her home. Mary spent a few weeks in a Columbus hospital before coming to the home of her mother, Shirley Compton of Ona, for a few days. Here's hoping you'll be up and around and "back in the saddle" soon, Mary.
EVENTS: During National Nursing Home Week (May 11-17), Fairhaven Rest Home Inc. encourages everyone to visit a friend or loved one in a nursing home. The theme is "Love Is Ageless." Activities at the center, 302 Adams Ave., include 2 p.m. today, ice cream social; 7 p.m. Tuesday, song fest; noon Wednesday, indoor picnic, 6 p.m., making memories; 2 p.m. Thursday, good times with Alice and Roger; 2 p.m. Friday, flea market sale; and 2 p.m. Saturday, movie matinee.
LET'S SEE: Dr. Joseph LoCascio, a board certified ophthalmologist and fellow of American College of Surgeons, was recently elected to the Cornea Society, a national organization dedicated to education and research in corneal surgery and disease. Dr. LoCascio, who practices with Huntington Internal Medicine Group, was among the first surgeons to perform the DSEK procedure.
VISIONS: "Visions of Music" art exhibition winners were recently awarded at The Renaissance Art Gallery with Robert Hutton, faculty emeritus from Marshall University, as juror. Sandra King of Wallback, W.Va., won the Award of Excellence for "String Study I." Brandi Stevens of Cross Lanes, W.Va., placed first for "Play it Again, Sam," and Barbara Yon of Ridge Spring, S.C., placed second for "Blue Bonsi." Recipient of the Merit Award was Barbara Delligatti of Ona, for "Porch Practice." Complimentary awards were received by Helen Williams of Charleston, for "Surf Sings" and Sabrina Reyntjens of Hurricane, for "Life of Cowboys."
