Imagination Movers hit town as part of first national tour
HUNTINGTON -- They're the most fun to happen to moving since "The Jeffersons."
The "Imagination Movers," Disney's Emmy Award-winning foursome, are headed to Huntington as part of their first national concert tour. They'll rock the Big Sandy Superstore Arena at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22.
The idea for the television show started at member Scott Durbin's son's birthday party in pre-Katrina New Orleans.
"Our chronology looks like we started as a band, but we actually started as an idea for a television show. We were talking about how there were no live-action TV shows for kids and started brainstorming this idea and created the Movers. After Katrina hit and the other guys lost everything, we really used that as motivation to push the project forward," said Scott "Smitty" Smith, himself a firefighter during the Hurricane Katrina ordeal.
The foursome has two CDs under its collective belt, "Juice Box Heroes" and "For Those About to Hop," which shipped in July.
"This is not a typical kids' show on the stage. We call it a concert with a narrative strung together in-between. We have lights, confetti and us rockin' out with guitar, bass, drums and mandolin. We're jumping up and down, playing music and having fun doing it," Smith explained.
Smith said features of the show, such as parent-directed jokes and musical references, help keep the concert fun for the adults as well.
"We're going to ask the audience to participate a lot and help us solve our 'idea emergency,'" Smith said. "We expect Huntington to definitely show up and help us problem-solve."
Along with Smith, the "Imagination Movers" are Rich Collins, a former journalist and father of five; Durbin, a teacher and father of two; and Dave Poche, an architect and father of two.
"Imagination Movers" airs weekdays at 9:30 a.m. and weekends at 10 a.m. on Disney Channel's Playhouse Disney.
