The school's theater department will stage performances of "A Christmas Carol" Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in the campus' J.B. Sowards Theater.
"This is the 15th anniversary of 'A Christmas Carol' for us. A lot of people tell me seeing it is the start of their holiday season," said theater professor and play director Edward Figgins.
"A Christmas Carol" centers on the transformation of miser Ebenezer Scrooge during the holiday season through a series of ghostly encounters and its impact on his employee Bob Cratchit. According to Figgins, the version of the play, written by Israel Horovitz, was chosen for its unparalleled accuracy to the original Charles Dickens text.
"I am really impressed by this particular version because it does stay so close to Dickens' original novel," he said. "Horovitz was able to lift .entire passages from the book and put in the play. The text is such a classic. I also enjoyed this version because it focuses on Scrooge and Marley. A lot of other versions get very showy and carried away with music or dance numbers."
The production utilizes 50 cast members, drawing from the student population as well as the community. A sizable number of children from area schools are included in the cast as well.
"This year, Scrooge is a community member who has done some work in New York and has recently moved to the area. Marley is a staff member who performed with us last year and the person playing the Bob Cratchit role has been doing it for seven years," Figgins said. "I've really noticed this year that he's (the Cratchit role) doing some different things than in the past, which helps keep things more alive for the audience."
This year's production includes some new costuming and refreshed sets, as well as new elements with the ghost scenes.
"The story is what really draws people in year after year," Figgins said. "We all know people like Scrooge who worship money more than anything else, and to see someone turn from an old miser to a man who is incredibly giving is very satisfying."
The theater department's upcoming productions include "Footloose," "The Crucible" and a children's theater production, "Seussical Jr."
Tickets for "A Christmas Carol" are available through the school's bookstore or at the door. Adult admission is $6. Students, seniors and groups of 10 or more are admitted for $4.
