Variety of events, dinners help you celebrate mom

HUNTINGTON -- Officially, Mother's Day is Sunday, but why wait to celebrate when you can start today?

There are a variety of events scheduled throughout the Tri-State this weekend, including a few special events today. There are special events for mom's and their children today at both the Huntington Mall and the Ashland Town Center.

A "Mom & Me Fashion Show" will take place beginning at 1 p.m. today at the Huntington Mall. It will be followed by a Mother/Daughter Look-A-Like contest.

The Ashland Town Center will host "Momtopia" from 3-5 p.m. today. Mothers can get mini-makeovers and manicures, as well as free samples and door prizes. Activities are also planned for children.

A Mother's Day Founders Festival will take place today and Sunday at the Anna Jarvis Birthplace Museum in Webster, W.Va. Events start at 2 p.m. and include music, a portrayal of Ann Reeves Jarvis, the mother of Annaa Jarvis and the inspiration for Mother's Day, crafters and the museum's "Mother of the Year" award ceremony. This year's winner is Margaret Cox.

Tamarack will celebrate Mother's Day all weekend. Today will feature a bell dancing performance at 7 p.m. and a special Middle Eastern menu in the food court. The Sunday@Two event highlights some of the state's well-known performers. A Mother's Day buffet will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Portrait artist Wendy Ackison will demonstrate her work throughout the weekend.

If you're waiting until Sunday to celebrate or just want to continue a weekend of special events, there are plenty other events Sunday.

The 100th annual observance of Mother's Day will begin at 9 a.m. Sunday at the International Mother's Day Shrine in Grafton, W.Va. The morning observance includes presentations in recognition of mothers.

Musical mothers will be featured at a special Mountain Stage performance at 7 p.m. Sunday at the International Mother's Day Shrine in Grafton. Tickets are available through ticketmaster.com.

Kentucky State Resort Parks, including Greenbo and Carter Caves, will feature a special Mother's Day Dinner from noon until 8 p.m. The buffet features a wide variety of menu items for $14.95 for adults and $6.95 for children ages 6-12.

For Mother's Day, people throughout the Tri-State will be treating mom with special dinners, gifts and more.
