Community yard sale to highlight 4th festivities
HUNTINGTON -- The historic Huntington neighborhood of Guyandotte is celebrating its freedom this weekend by selling out for a good cause.
Guyandotte, located along W.Va. 2 just east of downtown along the Ohio River, is hosting its first Fourth of July Celebration and Community Yard Sale.
SwineFest2009 in association with VFW 9738 will present the event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in front of the VFW located on Main St. in Guyandotte.
Music will be provided buy Guyandotte's own Gary Sellards and The Stoned Country Band. There will also be an inflatable and games for the kids, hot dog sale, baked goods auction, yard sale and more.
Rick Simmons, one of the organizers of the event and of a new community group called Swinefest Solutions, said the event will bring together the community and also help spread the word about Guyandotte's annual Swinefest, which will take place the weekend of Sept. 10-12.
"This is part of the revitalization of Guyandotte, and people asked for it," Simmons said. "We got together and hooked it up, and we'll see what happens."
Simmons said so far the community support has been amazing.
"When we first had Swinefest, it was Rocky Frazier and his wife (Reba) and me and my wife (Sue)," Simmons said. "Now we have over 20 people just coming for the volunteer committee. It is going to be really good. We now also have two cleanups a year, the kids Halloween party that drew 800 people and now the Fourth of July Celebration. The community is really coming together."
Simmons said the community group will continue to do yard sales from about 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays in the field space across Main Street from the VFW and donated by the VFW.
"We've been doing them on Saturdays, and they've been going really well," Simmons said. "These events prior to Swinefest not only promote Swinefest but Guyandotte as a real community unit."
