INDUCTION: The Barboursville Lions Club inducted its new officers for 2009-2010 on June 23, with past district governor Lion George Woodrum performing the installation: Kathy Tye, president; Bernice Hesson, vice president; Marjolee Brady, second vice president; Tennyson Thornberry, third vice president; Clayton Cremeans, treasurer; Betty Buzzard, secretary; Orman Hall, lion tamer; Steve Nash, tail twister; and Janet Artrip, membership chair. Members of the board of directors are Bill Crews and Charlotte Adkins, one-year directors, and Steve Forman and Charlie Buzzard, two-year directors.
GOLF: Christ the King Lutheran Church had its annual golf scramble last Saturday at Orchard Hills Country Club. Members of the winning team were Bob Lake, Claude Hobbs, Jack Sharp and Connie Sharp. Coming in second were Janet Fisher, Danielle Endicott, Sherman Kelly and David Lapelle. Pastor Brian Nunnally, not an avid golfer, participated and made the statement that he now knows why golf is a four-letter word.
RETIREMENT: Congratulations to Ed Smith of East Pea Ridge who retired July 1, after 36 years of service as foreman of the grounds department for the Cabell County Board of Education. Ed and his wife, Vicky, plan to start enjoying retirement immediately by visiting their new great-grandson, Bryce Phoenix Newman, and his brother, Cody, of Fort Lee, Va. Bryce and Cody are the sons of Stanton and Lindsay Newman.
MISSION TEAM: Members of the Pea Ridge United Methodist Church's mission team who will work in Buckhannon, W.Va., from July 12-18, are Luke Adkins, Richard Adkins, Erin Bailey, Vanessa Bailey, David Blackburn, Steve Chapman, Jenny Clark, Sue Jarrett, Chrissy Lewis, Sharon McAllister, Barbara Nelson, Adam Shaver, Erin Shaver, Karl Shaver, Micki Shaver, Mitch Shaver and Rose Thornburg.
MEETING: At 6 p.m. July 7, a neighborhood watch meeting will be at Elmwood Baptist Church's fellowship hall, 3045 Martha Road, for residents of Williamsburg Colony and Chaffin Estates. Guest speakers will be Chris Boyer, store manager, and Renee Beckett, sales associate of Home Depot. They will share tips to enhance home curb appeal and inexpensive home improvement ideas. GAME NIGHT: A family game night will be at Pea Ridge United Methodist Church, 5747 Pea Ridge Road, from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight, July 3. Several board games will be provided or participants may bring their favorite board games and a refreshment to share with others. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
1979 REUNION: Summer is a great time for class reunions. Members of the Barboursville High School 1979 class will have their 30th reunion with a get-together from 7 to 11 p.m. July 17, and a dinner buffet from 7 to 11 p.m. July 18, at the Holiday Inn, Route 60 East, Barboursville. 1989 REUNION: The 20-year reunion of the Barboursville High School Class of 1989 will be during Labor Day weekend, Sept. 4-6, with a picnic at Barboursville Park on Friday, attending the Marshall University football game on Saturday night and a dinner on Sunday. 1947 REUNION: The time has been changed if you are planning to attend the 1947 Barboursville High School 62nd reunion July 11, at the home of Olive Hager in Hamlin. Festivities will begin at 2 p.m. instead of 4:30 p.m. For information, call Hager at 304-824-3369 or Joan Sharp at 304-736-1384.
