WINNERS: Five individuals -- Dottie Ross, Mike Smith, Ryan Aschemeier and John Jessen, all of Ashland, and Homer Carter of Kenova -- each won $1,000 during the annual spring gala at Ashland's Paramount Arts Center. Lloyd Hall of Pikeville, Ky., took the $10,000 prize; while Pat John of Ashland, claimed the $20,000 grand prize.
VOLUNTEERS: What would we do without volunteers -- we need them, everyone. Seven were recognized during the recent 10th annual volunteer celebration at Jeffrey George Comfort House. Linda Turner, Dotty Stacks and Patty Dickson were honored as "Women of the Decade;" Kay Freeman, "Ever Faithful" volunteer of year; Gay Bird, "Dedication and Diligence;" Linda Layman, "Compassion;" and Rhonda Smalley, Cabell Midland High music director, "Jazz Knights" performance at February's annual sweetheart celebration. Betty Wooten and Doris Williams, who have passed away, were remembered. Jo Fulks is the newest volunteer, which makes it "look out time" since she's the second "Jo" working at the house -- Jo Fannin is executive director.
LUCKY 13: Count it lucky? It was 11:07 a.m. May 13, 40 years ago when Tina Lynn was born to Bill and Sally Johnson of Salt Rock. She is wife of Stan Coniff and mother of twin sons, Matthew and Mark Mathley of Barboursville. Tina is the nurse of Dr. Jason Hudak at United Health Professionals.
MARCH ON: Marshall University's Fife and Drum Corps performs Saturday, May 17, at the annual Drummer's Call Muster in Colonial Williamsburg, Va. Marshall students also appear at Busch Gardens and in Richmond at the John Marshall House during the tour. The live webcast performance begins at 12:30 p.m. at www.history.org/drummerscall/. The creation of the corps was inspired by two MU alumnae, Lutricia Tampa Fields and Jennifer Raczok Bailey, who now perform with the Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps in Washington.
O-G-N-I-B: That's bingo spelled backwards but the callers for April games at The Woodlands Retirement Community were not calling numbers that way. They were Willa Slack, Marie Scheff, Isabel Spindel, Peggy Wild, Maybelle Messinger and Paul Humphreys.

CHUCKLE: A farmer runs into the pastor of his church after missing a Sunday service. "I'm sorry I missed you this morning," the pastor says. "Well, Rev'rund," the farmer says, "I had some hay to put up. I figured it was better to sit on a bale of hay thinking about God than to sit in church thinking about hay."
