Wednesday's Community News: Brenda Lucas
SALE: Looking for something different and/or unusual? This may be the place to go.
Pea Ridge United Methodist Church offers a trash and treasures rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at the church, 5747 Pea Ridge Road.
NUMBER 85: Martha Adkins turned 85 on Aug. 27. Here's hoping this fine individual had a good day and is blessed with many more healthy and happy ones to come.
BEANS: Mountaineer Sportsman Gun club offers the annual bean dinner at 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at Milton VFW. Three guns are raffled and door prizes are available. An auction is also available with Ronald Morrison, auctioneer. The cost is $5 and free for children age 12 and younger. Call 304-638-1608, 304-743-4383 or 304-762-2351.
GOOD: It's always good hearing from a special lady who has added tender loving care to many people in the community -- Jo Fannin, executive director of Jeffrey E. George Comfort House. Thanks for all your newsworthy tidbits, good lady.
MILITARY: Air Force Airman 1st Class Jessica A. Kerns graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. Jessica, daughter of Delmer and Edith Kerns of Ironton, graduated from Rock Hill High School in 2002.
GRAD: One fellow from my graduating class in the early '70s at the former Barboursville High has stunned me more than if I were hit by a stun gun. Rod Barnett -- or should I say Dr. Rod Barnett -- is an evangelist with Billy Graham Evangelical Association, where he has worked with the outreach ministry for 14 years. It never crossed my mind during high school that Rod would become a speaker of God's Word, but it certainly is great news. Keep preaching, good brother -- maybe the next time you're in town, I will be free to listen to your message.
BEAUTIFUL: Still beautiful and still in the news. Heather Nichols is a 23-year-old Barboursville native who may have placed first in every beauty pageant she entered in her childhood days. Heather, daughter of Jack and Sue Nichols of Barboursville, appeared recently on the CBS soap "The Bold and the Beautiful." Working as a professional actress and living in Los Angeles for four years, this beauty queen has been a delivery girl in a commercial for Jimmy John's Sandwich Shop and a student in the NBC series "Teachers."
RECIPIENTS: Beverly Hills Woman's Club recently awarded $1,000 scholarships to two Marshall University freshmen students. Kelsey Paige Bellamy, a Huntington High graduate, is working toward a career in nursing. Chantelle Hager, a Cabell Midland grad, plans a medical career.
HIGHEST: It's not a question of whether or not Mike Murphy, Marshall University theater professor, is still on cloud 9. Mike was recently honored with the Suzanne Davis Award at the 2008 South Eastern Theater Conference's awards banquet in Chattanooga, Tenn. Congratulations, Mike, for receiving the highest award the conference bestows.
NAMED: Congratulations to Caren L. Williams, associate consultant with 19 years of experience with Vanguard Solutions Inc. of Ashland, Ky. Caren recently completed requirements to become an ASQ-Certified Quality Auditor.

TODAY'S ANNIVERSARY: Ed and Ethel Clark celebrate the 36th.
CHUCKLE: A juggler, driving to his next performance, is stopped by the police. "What are those knives doing in your car?" asks the officer. "I juggle them in my act," says the juggler. "Oh yeah?" says the cop. "Let's see you do it." So the juggler starts tossing and juggling the knives. A guy driving by sees this and says, "Wow, am I glad I quit drinking. Look at the test they're making you do now!"
