MULTIPLE BIRTHDAYS: The McKenna family of Barboursville do a lot of celebrating in August and September. They celebrated four birthdays -- Tim McKenna, Aug. 19; Sharon McKenna, Aug. 22; John McKenna, Aug. 29; and Kenneth McKenna, Sept. 1 -- and one anniversary, Kevin and Kathy McKenna, on Sept. 2. On Sept.14, Tim McKenna will be awarded the Presidential Volunteer Service Award for the fifth time in as many years. Tim lives in Youngstown, Ohio, but visits the region often as his two daughters attend Marshall University.
EAGLE SCOUT: Congratulations to Dilum Aluthge, the newest Eagle Scout in Muguyoh District and the 72nd Eagle Scout in Troop 62, sponsored by Pea Ridge United Methodist Church. Dilum is the son of Ari and Mongalika Aluthge and is a sophomore at Huntington High School. He is a brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow, Thal-Coo-Zyo Lodge 457. His Eagle project was collecting and donating 1,137 books to the Hovah Hall Underwood Children's Home in Ona and the Cecil H. Underwood Senior Center in Huntington.
REUNION: The 1948 class of Barboursville High School will celebrate its 60th reunion this weekend with a pizza dinner at the Barboursville Community Park tonight and a dinner at the Holiday Inn of Barboursville Saturday evening. Local class members who will attend are Betty Mason Collins, Elmo Bledsoe, Wanda Newman Boster, Ruth Thompson Hatfield, Elsworth Smith, Jim Call, Bob Rimmer, Gary Keys, Hollis Kuhn, Betty Dirton Collins, Nellie Deveny Kirby, Joanne Sanns Wellman, Joan Mays Gross, Sam White, Fannie LeGrand Blake and Beatrice Akers Siple. Out-of-town alumni who plan to attend are Margaret Ann Curry Wise from Maryland, Anita Wallace Wood from Indiana, and Robert Cazad from Florida.
FALL FEST: Pre-sale tickets are now available until Sept. 17 for the Barboursville Fall Fest carnival at Barboursville City Hall, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., for $10 for one session any day of the carnival. At the carnival, tickets may be purchased for $12 and $15. The carnival will be held from 5 to 10 p.m. on Sept. 17 to 20 at Sadler Field, Barboursville.
REUNION: The Huntington East High School class of 1952 will meet for "lupper" at 2 p.m. on Sept. 10 at the Ponderosa Restaurant on U.S. 60 and Washington Boulevard. Fifteen or 20 classmates and spouses usually attend and have a good "chit-chatting" time.
RUMMAGE SALE: Be sure to stop by the trash and treasures rummage sale at the Pea Ridge United Methodist Church from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. Saturday. The kitchen will also be open. For more information, you may call Linda McClain at 304-736-2268 or 304-736-4467.
CANCER AWARENESS: As September is Prostate Cancer Awareness month, a nationwide call for action is being made to spread the word about this potentially deadly but highly treatable illness. My Brother's Keeper of Ebenezer Medical Outreach, Inc., is answering that call at the 4th Annual Men's Health Event at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Marie Redd Center, 1760 9th Ave., Huntington. Dr. James Jensen of Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center, Dr. Rocco Morabito of Huntington Urological Association, Inc., and Dr. Gerald McKinney of University Physicians and Surgeons will speak at the event, which is free and open to all men. FUN DAY: Lighhouse Baptist Church, Milton, holds its annual fun day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday with inflatables, games, door prizes and free hot dogs, nachos and cheese, and soft drinks for all. The public is invited.
BAKE SALE: The Underwood Senior Center, 632 9th Ave., Huntington, is holding a rummage and bake sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. For more information, you may call Karen Sifford, 304-529-3673.
ZUMBA: Premiere Dance Studio is offering zumba lessons on Wednesdays from 5 to 6 p.m. beginning Sept. 3 and yoga lessons on Thursday from 5 to 6 p.m. beginning Sept. 11. Classes are $6 each and registration is not required. Contact 304-523-5152 for more information.
