Cassandra Parsons: Make start of school year a time to usher in new routines, resolutions
Stephanie Hill writes in her column this month that the start of a new school year is when “New Year’s Resolutions are made in my house, rather than the typical Jan. 1 time.”
I agree wholeheartedly. When the dog days of summer make way for the crisper, cooler evenings of September, I feel a renewed sense of energy and begin to assess my life, looking for steps I can take to make this year even better than the last.
The new school year is a time when students can resolve that last year’s “C” will this year become a “B;” when parents can resolve that last year’s daily bedtime fight will become this year’s pleasant routine; when everyone can resolve that last year’s last-minute panics can become this year’s cool, calm, planning ahead.
Are you ready to make some resolutions?
Cynthia Soto’s cover story offers tips from local parents and professionals for working with your children and their teachers to get the most out of their school experience; Stephanie Hill offers tried-and-true tips for improving your family’s eating habits — after all, a well-nourished brain is better poised for learning; Deborah Somuano, of the United Way, offers tips on getting the littlest learners ready for structured day care or preschool; and education expert Dennis Bills explains why dress codes aren’t just about imposing rules, but creating a healthy, focused learning environment and preparing youngsters for the future.
But wait!
It can’t be all work and no play. To make this the best year yet, you must achieve balance. So, after the homework is finished, check out our calendar of family events and go out and have some fun! And when you parents have some down time, treat yourself to a laugh by reading Scott Parsons’ and Bonny Rushbrook’s tales of parenting.
From our family to yours, may this month of transition usher in a fabulous year!
