Local singer, songwriter wins his first Dove Award
HUNTINGTON -- Local singer and songwriter John Darin Rowsey can now add Dove Award winner to his biography.
Rowsey, who was born in West Virginia and now lives in Flatwoods, Ky., with his wife, Shirley, received the award recently in Nashville during Gospel Music Association's 39th annual Dove Awards show.
Rowsey received the honor for writing "He's in Control" for bluegrass song of the year. It was his first Dove Award. The song was performed by the group Austin's Bridge, which features Rowsey's son Michael Rowsey.
Rowsey is no stranger to fans of gospel music. He has written three songs that have charted No. 1 nationally with southern gospel music enthusiasts. He is best known for writing "Singing With the Saints." Bill and Gloria Gaither produced a video featuring the song as its title cut. The video has become one of the largest selling gospel videos of all time. It achieved platinum status for selling more than 100,000 units during its first year. It was Southern Gospel's video of the year in 1997.
During the past 14 years, Rowsey has written or performed music that is approaching 1 million units sold. He performs throughout the country nearly 100 times per year.
In addition to his writing and performances, Rowsey hosts the Sunday Morning Jubilee on 93.7 The Dawg with Angie Casserta. He remains active in a leadership capacity with the music program at Christ Temple.
