Clay Center program expands access to more patrons

November 06, 2009 @ 11:20 PM

CHARLESTON -- The Clay Center has launched a program making access to the center's hands-on science galleries, art exhibits, family fun events and more available at a deeply discounted rate to low-income families in West Virginia.

The program is now available to qualifying applicants.

"When the Clay Center was built, its founders promised to make the center available for all West Virginians, and this program makes great strides in fulfilling that promise," said U.S. Senator Robert C. Byrd in a news release. "The access program will have far-reaching implications on how deeply and effectively the Clay Center is able to connect with, educate and serve families across the state."

The Clay Center's new Access to Excitement program reduces the price of an annual family membership to the Avampato Discovery Museum from $75 to $20 for qualifying families.

To be eligible, families must provide proof of benefits through one of the following: Medicaid, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Women, Infants and Children (WIC) or Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

"Providing discounted memberships is the next logical step in the center's community outreach efforts," said Clay Center President and CEO Judy Wellington. "We will continue to offer our annual free day and other one-time events, but this program enables families to visit the museum on their schedules, not just ours. It really encourages a lifetime of exploration and learning."

For $20, families will receive: Unlimited admission to the museum galleries and planetarium for a full year, unlimited $2 admission to giant screen films in the ElectricSkyTM Theater, free admission to more than 200 museums worldwide, discounts on birthday parties and workshops, subscription to the quarterly members' newsletter to stay informed of upcoming events, a 15 percent discount in the gift shop and a 10 percent discount in the cafe.

Applications for the Access to Excitement program are available at the Clay Center box office, or adults can check with their local Medicaid, SNAP, WIC and CHIP administrative office. Proof of enrollment is required.
