BEAUTY: The overall high point award at the recent springtime Beauties and Beaus Pageant in Huntington went to Desiree Simpson, daughter of Deidra and Eric Simpson of Scottown, Ohio. The pageant was presented by Beautiful Faces.

MILITARY: Army National Guard Pvt. Ryan A. Delong graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. The private, a 2004 Jackson High grad, is the son of Tim and Tracy DeLong of Jackson, Ohio.

REP: Matt Wedge, who attended Marshall University, is a financial services representative with MetLife in Hurricane, W.Va. A member of the Huntington Chamber of Commerce, Matt has previous experience in the financial services industry.

FAMILY: Allow me to introduce Nick Angelo, Angela and Landen Michael -- the newest family at St. Peter's Episcopal Church.

ILL: Paul Kendrick, member of Milton's Lighthouse Baptist Church, has been a little under the weather. Paul, a great servant of the Lord, is one of the sweetest and kindest gentlemen a person could ever meet. Get-well wishes, love, prayers and thoughts are offered to this "Candy Man." May Paul be up and riding high soon.

PRINCESS: I recently had the opportunity to spend time with a princess -- Annika Josephine Bruce. Annika, daughter of Paul and Kathy Bruce of South Point, Ohio, colored me a picture of a dog and talked like an adult while waiting for her brother Alec to return from an appointment. She's such a lovely, intelligent 6-year-old granddaughter that anyone would be proud of, especially Granny Roberta Holbrook. Annika, the picture remains hanging in my work area.

MOVING: Head 'em up, move 'em out after July 5. Dancers and/or performers with DanceIt! Performance Studio head for a new home -- 5505 U.S. 60 East, Suite 230. The studio, directed by Mary Petrany, is in the same building as Kerr's Music Co. Summer clinics are offered July 7-10 at the new location. Island Adventure, open to ages 4-7, is from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., followed by Pop Star Extravaganza for ages 7-12 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Other clinics for July 14-17 include: Technique Intensive, ages 12 and older, 5 p.m.; Island Adventure, ages 2-5, 6 p.m.; Hip Hop Holiday, ages 7-12, 6:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. NAMED: Twenty-two local students were named to the dean's list at Ashland Community and Technical College for the spring semester. Achieving the distinction from Fort Gay are Kristie Cyrus, Richard Delong, Rebecca Jackson, Bobbi Leach, Rachel Perry, Tina Presley, Anna Stevens, Douglas Thompson and Carolyn Thornhill; Kimberly Adkins, Jessica Berry, Alex Brewster, Christina Gordon, Susan McHale, Timothy Norris, Huntington; Amanda Gardner, Gregory Larsen, Kenova; Jessica Dillon, Lavalette; Traci Miller, Prichard; Gregory Morrison, Barboursville; Larry Thompson, Genoa; and Timothy Willis, Ceredo.

HOT DOG! A drive-in hot dog stand reopened after being closed two years on June 11 under the ownership of Bill Ghiz and Corey Hutchinson. Smith's Midway Drive-In, located in the 400 block of 6th Avenue West, is renamed Midway West. Welcome back, folks, many missed that wonderful food.

TODAY'S BIRTHDAYS: Kathy Taylor, long-time advertising representative with The Herald-Dispatch, lights the birthday candles; Kortney Sarka is one under of becoming an adult (20), John Scribner is 2 under a nickel (3); Zackary Thomas Meadows is one under becoming a teenager (12); Raymond Byrd is 7 away from 60 (53); Jackson Holbrook, Betty Chapman, Helen Dean, Barbara Boley, Tracey Franklin and Glenna Keisler.
