Saturday's Community News: Brenda Lucas

May 16, 2008 @ 10:49 PM

60 CANDLES: The head custodian at Ona Elementary who retired last year turned 60 May 16. Don't fret there, Roger Dowdy, the cane doesn't come for a few more years.

DINNER: Want to eat out this evening? You can by traveling to Milton's Lighthouse Baptist Church where a spaghetti dinner is offered for donations. The fund-raising dinner is served from 5 to 7 p.m. Proceeds go toward a new sign for the church.

CHAT: What an enjoyable time visiting with Evelyn Paugh, who is retired from The Herald-Dispatch. While grocery shopping, I was blessed with chatting with this fine lady friend. Evelyn remains as sweet, thoughtful and beautiful as the first time I met her. She also mentioned how she enjoys this column and its chuckles.

NURSES: Four from St. Mary's School of Nursing Class of 2009 were elected as officers of the West Virginia Student Nurses Association. Sarah Terry Wagoner of Barboursville, was elected treasurer; Krista Arbogast of Huntington, and Lori Baldwin of Culloden, directors-at-large; Mary Vaughn of Milton, legislative director. The ladies are also members of the school's Student Nurses Association.

FUDGY: Some of the best chocolate fudge that I've ever tasted was made by Helen Killeen of Huntington. It was great renewing our acquaintance and spending a few moments talking with this kind, sweet lady. Thanks for the memories ... and fudge.

OPENED: Doors opened for Traci Ann Stanley of Wayne, when she won the recent WQBE-FM contest allowing her to walk - or should I say sing - through another door. The 21-year-old country singing hopeful opened for the recent Pirates and Poets Tour starring Kenny Chesney and Lee Ann Rimes in Charleston. Traci's new album, "Right Here," is available at www.myspace.com/traciannstanley. This certainly deserves a big round of applause, Traci.

85TH: Shhh, those knowing Ida Mildred Cartmill Finley of Proctorville, Ohio, may not know she turned 85 May 12. Here's hoping she continues to be active and is around another 15 or so years.

SPAGHETTI: And lots of it served from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Highlawn Presbyterian Church. The cost is $6 and $4 children age 12 and younger. A bake sale is also available. Money raised is used to send youth to Bluestone Church Camp.

SALADS: American Association of University Women invites the Ashland and Ironton branches to a salad luncheon at 11 a.m. today at Huntington Museum of Art. The annual scholarship is awarded. Jenine Culligan, senior curator at the museum, speaks.
