ARTS: Area 10th-grade students have been selected to attend this summer's 2008 Governor's School for the Arts at West Liberty State College. Cabell Countians include Sarah Hayes, dance; Sarah Wilson, visual art; Kathryn Pettit and Eric Newfeld, vocal music. Others include Emily Kuhn, Mason County, theater; Eli Chambers, Putnam County, instrumental music; and Jasmine Lewis, Wayne County, creative writing.

FRIENDSHIP: Area church women can share friendships during the Church Women United's May Friendship Day at 5:30 p.m. Friday, May 2, at Tri-State Fire Academy, 4200 Ohio River Road. The event, sponsored by the New Beverly Hills Baptist Church, carries "God's Wisdom Inspires Hospitality" as its theme. PLANTING: Mark Springer of Lavalette Nursery discusses "New Plants for Old Houses" during the Southside Neighborhood Association meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 1, at the Junior League Building, 617 9th Ave. Prizes and refreshments are available.

BLOOD: St. Joe Student Council sponsors the annual blood drive and toy drive from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, May 1, at St. Joseph Central Catholic High School gymnasium, 600 13th St. "Christmas in May" benefits underprivileged and low-income children through the Salvation Army, Kiwanis Day Care and Central City Elementary's "Reward a Child" Program. Those wanting to donate toys are asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy to the school any time during the day. Carrie Rice, a Riverview Manor resident and regular reader of this column who enjoys the chuckles, also becomes another year "younger."

CHUCKLE: A family received a card with a painting of a Pilgrim family on their way to church. Grandma showed the card to her small grandchildren observing: "The Pilgrim children like to go to church with their mothers and fathers." "Oh yeah?" her young grandson replied, "So why is their dad carrying that rifle?"
