'All the Colors of Love' fills Renaissance Center
HUNTINGTON -- Whether you're falling in love or out of love, Arts Resources for the Tri-State has a Valentine's gift for you.
"All the Colors of Love," directed by Beth McVey and featuring 10 of the Tri-State's favorite voices, will be presented at the Renaissance Center, 900 8th St., four times during the Valentine's weekend: at 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and at 2 p.m. Sunday. A dinner will be offered before each evening performance at 6:30 p.m. Cost of the dinner is $15. Admission to the show is $15.
"This is like a musical revue. We've taken love songs from musicals, knit them together with a loose storyline and come up with a show about finding love, dating, falling in love, getting married, falling out of love, getting divorced, getting remarried ... it's all the colors of love," McVey said.
The arts organization was originally planning to present a different program, though the board members agreed it was the wrong choice for the personnel they had to work with. They went to work creating their own show and "All the Colors of Love" was the result.
"The show we were planning to do was inappropriate for us. It was written specifically for the stars who performed in it, with big, huge dance breaks in the middle of the musical numbers," McVey said. "It wasn't right for our stage or our vocalists. What we've created is very much like a cabaret ... pretty people singing pretty songs in pretty costumes. It's going to be an elegant evening."
Five men and five women will perform solos, duets and trios throughout the evening, including "I Get A Kick Out of You," "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?", "My Funny Valentine," "The Honeymoon Is Over," and "Love Changes Everything," among others. The show will run approximately two hours.
Featured performers include Michelle Conley, Leann Haines, Mary Olson, Linda Reynolds, Mary Beth Withers, Mark Baker, Chris Bowling, Chris Chiles, Paul Neace, Dave Richards and McVey herself. Accompanist will be Bruce Rous. Musical director is Eddie Harbert. The show is choreographed by Coni Anthony. Also assisting is Ashleigh Bills.
The show got a test run at Tamarack last weekend, as the group was invited to perform in the arts facility's dinner theatre season.
