FUNDRAISER: Tri-State Area Council, Boy Scouts of America, hopes to raise its goal of $6,500 at the Cabell and Lincoln Counties Community Friends of Scouting dinner at 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 16, at Barboursville Veterans Home. The dinner, designed to support the 3,500 youth participating annually in the Boy Scout Program from both counties, features Congressman Nick J. Rahall as speaker. Table hosts are Terry Houck, Janet Artrip, Dr. Wayne Thacker, John Van Horn, Alvan Watts and Jeff Jackson. For reservations, call 304-523-3408.

FELLOW: Dr. Maria del Carmen Riddel is a jolly good fellow -- Dr. Maria has been named the Drinko Academy Fellow for 2008. The professor of Spanish and chair of Department of Modern Languages since 2002 has been with the department since 1983 teaching introductory language classes to Spanish culture, literature, history and honors courses. The native of Spain plans to write a book about Cuban-Americans from materials compiled over the past five years while working with now-retired history professor David Duke.

SCREENING: Nothing free? Think again -- St. Mary's Medical Center sponsors a free health screening from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 17, at Pea Ridge United Methodist Church, 5747 East Pea Ridge Road.

HE'S GRAND: 84-year-old William C. Campbell of Huntington, is a "grand old man" -- no matter how you look at it. William, president of U.S. Golf Association from 1982-1984 and captain of Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews in 1987-88, was described as one of golf's grand old men in the April 14, issue of "Sports Illustrated." He also played in The Masters 18 of 26 years, more than any other living amateur, which resulted in winning the West Virginia Amateur championship 15 times; competing in the U.S. Amateur 37 times; playing in the U.S. Open 15 times; two U.S. Senior Amateur championships and 1964 U.S. Amateur title.

DANCE: Vinson Middle School sponsors a Hawaiian-themed dance from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, May 17, in the cafeteria. Admission is $5. Concessions are available. Proceeds benefit the Web Accelerated Reading project.

PLACED: Cabell County students placing in the recent 2008 West Virginia State Math Field Day competition at Shepherd University, Shepherdstown, W.Va., include Charles Newfeld, first place, grade 4, Village of Barboursville Elementary; William Zhang, fifth place, grade 8, Beverly Hills Middle; Dilum Aluthge, fourth place, grade 9, Huntington High. In grades 10-12, Sam Shideler of Huntington High placed second; Rachel Parlock, Cabell Midland, fifth; Alexander Williamson, Huntington High, 19th; Suzann Al-Qawasmi, Huntington High, 24th. Sam Shideler and Rachel Parlock have been invited to participate in West Virginia's team for the 2008 American Regional Mathematics League competition.

A special, kind lady with a wonderful smile and encouraging words, Luanna Karlet, becomes another year younger, as does another inspiring Christian lady, Emma Dillon Turley. Arnold Sullivan and daughter-in-law Kim Sullivan celebrate the same day.

CHUCKLE: After the benediction of a Sunday morning service, the minister planned to call the couple down for a brief wedding ceremony before the congregation. He couldn't remember the names of those who were to be married, so he asked, "Will those wanting to get married please come to the front?" Without waiting, nine single ladies, three widows, four widowers and six single men stepped to the front.
