CHAT: What a pleasure to recently chat with Ida Trammell, her daughter, Ibri, and grandmother, Ida Mae Stevens. Ida Trammell has been a part of my family for many years, and it is always good to see her smiling face. Ibri continues to be a blessing with her sweetness, happy face, maturity and intelligence. Here's hoping Grandma Ida is kicking a little higher after her recent hospitalization.

SUPERIOR: Two Huntington High Marching Band members were chosen to be a part of the West Virginia All State Band. Tyler Davis, a sophomore and son of Paul and Sandy Davis, and Rachel Wyant, a junior and daughter of Gail and Barry Wyant, auditioned in January and perform this weekend at West Virginia Music Educator's Conference in Wheeling. Tyler, who plays tuba, and Rachel, who plays clarinet and is a drum major, also received a "superior" rating during Regional Solo and Ensemble Day at Marshall University in February. Band directors are Melissa Ash and Jeremy Richardson.

TREASURES: To find treasures, you may attend today's rummage sale beginning at 8 a.m. at Milton Baptist Church. The event is sponsored by the Missions Committee.

WINNER: Congratulations Louise Huss of Huntington, for receiving the $100 gift certificate for the winning ticket from a drawing at Galleria Merle Norman and Wig Store.

CONCERT: The Godsmen features 27 years of Southern gospel music at 6 p.m. Sunday, March 30, at the 26th Street Baptist Church, 2510 10th Ave. Call (304) 522-4125.

HAND CLAP: A round of applause for Lois Merritt's Covenant High School Latin class for receiving first- and second-place ribbons in several categories at the recent West Virginia Junior Classical League competition in Morgantown. Winning categories included team competition, grammar I, mythology, models, mosaics, games, vocabulary I and miscellaneous projects (a video and a screenplay). Second-place and honorable mention ribbons were awarded in the derivatives contest. Keep up the good work, class.

NAMED: Good news shouldn't have a deadline and hearing that Fran Browning, accounting assistant I in the School of Medicine, Finance, was named Marshall University Employee of the Month for January, shouldn't go unnoticed. Fran, an employee since 1989, was presented a plaque, balloon bouquet and $100 check from President Stephen J. Kopp.

BELATED: Gloria Hayslip had a b-i-g birthday March 28 -- she celebrated the 30th anniversary of her 29th birthday. In other words, she turned the big 6-0. Here's hoping you enjoyed the event, Gloria.

TODAY'S BIRTHDAYS: Larry Legge, Cheryl Smith, Maxine Waugh, Becki Davis, Kate Murray, Alexandria Boltz, Jason Wagner, Sherri Horn, Rhonda McIntyre, Lauren Brumfield, Jeanine Hunter, Nathan Rowe, Lindsey Watts, Shawn Warren, Jerry Brandon, Jakki Moore, Patricia Grimes, Laura Williams, Anita Givner, Ray Blankenship, Clinton Wilson, Robert Cremeans, Shawkey Saba, Rachel Beahrs, Chris McIntyre and Cole Diamond. Charles Rader, a retired employee of The Herald-Dispatch's circulation department, also wears the birthday hat. It's one "very special" candle for Elizabeth Faith Justice. Maxine Waugh, a volunteer at St. Mary's Medical Center for about 20 years, turns another year "younger."

SUNDAY'S BIRTHDAYS: Brian New, Betty Nicholas, James Kingery, Kati Lee, Diana Roy, Tim Roberts, Stacy Morrison, Joel Bentley, Pam Rawn, Melanie Gossett, Andy Skirpan, Kayla Campbell, Paul Marshall, Kristy Woods, Kathy Large, Darrell Byrd, Larry McClanahan and Fred Moskey, retired law enforcement officers, Donarita Stanley and Jack Wheeler, Paw Taw Square Dance Club member. SUNDAY'S ANNIVERSARIES: Ted and Stephanie Edwards, and Mac and Katrina Morris.

CHUCKLE: On a Montana family vacation, a mother drove past a church in a small town and told the children that it was St. Francis' Church. "It must be a franchise," her 8-year-old son said. "We've got one of those in our town, too."
