Metropolitan Opera comes to Ashland
ASHLAND -- It's time for a grand new opera in Ashland.
Cinemark's Cinema 10 movie theater in Ashland is going to be the home for high-definition broadcasts of the Metropolitan Opera in this new series that is being broadcast live via satellite to movie theaters across the world.
Gounod's Romeo et Juliette, starring Anna Netrebko and Roberto Alagna and conducted by Placido Domingo, will screen at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15.
Tickets are $22; $20 for seniors; and $15 for children.
It is just the first in eight performances that will take place throughout 2008.
Last year, the Metropolitan Opera took the art form to a whole new level with its groundbreaking series of high-definition broadcasts into movie theaters around the world.
This initiative was so successful, that the Metropolitan Opera is expanding by adding two additional operas to the series and beaming the live one-time only performances into triple the number of movie theaters from last year, and this year, that includes Ashland.
The hope is that this innovative project will continue to broaden the public appeal of opera and make world-renowned entertainment more accessible to opera aficionados who are unable to visit the Met in New York or to people who have never been to an opera.
Of special note is the second opera in this series is a New Year's Day performance of Humperdinck's Hansel & Gretel, a family-friendly opera that provides a great opportunity to introduce children to opera while they're on winter break.
Ticket information is available online at www.metopera.org/hdlive or by calling (800) 638-6737.
