60 YEARS: After six decades, the antique barber pole continues to spin on the corner of 4th Avenue and 1st Street as a friendly welcome to Midway Barbershop. Feb. 16, marks the 60th anniversary of the shop, owned by Nick Morabito. To celebrate the loyal Huntington "heads," the business offers a customer appreciation day Tuesday, Feb. 12. Light refreshments are also offered. The shop remains in the same location and the same building, except for a fresh coat of paint, reupholstered chairs and addition of a flat-screen television.

STAR STUDENT: Jordan Ray Rutherford, a Village of Barboursville Elementary student, has a 4.0 grade point average for the third consecutive six weeks. Jordan, son of Suzanne Rutherford, never has to be forced to do homework. He loves his new niece, Haylie Grace. Keep up the good work, Jordan, you continue to be my star.

TOGETHER: Fran Whitley, who enjoys this column and chuckle, and her friend, Jack Nelson, both Proctorville, Ohio, residents, celebrated their February birthdays together. Fran's birthday was Feb. 8, and Jack's is Sunday, Feb. 10.

RESEARCH: 18 Marshall University students recently participated in the fifth annual Undergraduate Research Day at the State Capitol, Charleston. Participants were Jennifer Cavender, Todd Amick and Tiffany Oxley, psychology; Heather Butts, Adam Short, William Kelly, Laurel Ackison, Megan Neal, Ashley Stewart and Waseem Khader, biology; Brent D. Frederick, Jamar Grayson and Marvyn Grayson, biological science; Candice M. Dotson and Rebecca L. Klug, chemistry; Daniel Velazquez, physics; Zachary Tackett, biochemistry; and Amelia Boslaugh, art and design.

WORKSHOP: From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the Barboursville Library, 728 Main St., Barboursville Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution offers a workshop for prospective members. GET WELL: It's being circulated that Ray Church, transportation coordinator at Westmoreland Senior Center, has been out for awhile due to illness. Here's wishing Ray a speedy recovery and hoping he'll return to the center very soon.

ELECTED: Three have been elected as new vestry members at St. Peter's Episcopal Church. John Hagan, Leroy Dillon and Bob Carico were elected to three-year terms.

AMAZING: It doesn't seem possible, but it's true - Okey Bates of Barboursville has been a bus driver for Cabell County Schools 42 years. In fact, he drove the yellow bus when I was a student at Barboursville High School in the early 70s. That definitely is a good record, Okey. May you continue being an inspiration to the young and old alike.

CHUCKLE: During a prayer request at a mid-week service, a woman said that Harlotta remains in the hospital and needs blood donors for more transfusions. The request also said she is having trouble sleeping and requests tapes of the pastor's sermons.
