'My Little Pony' coming to Big Sandy Arena

March 16, 2008 @ 10:55 PM

HUNTINGTON -- For all those kids who didn't get ponies for Christmas, cheer up: Ponies are coming to a venue near you.

"My Little Pony Live!" will host "The World's Biggest Tea Party" at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena on Tuesday and Wednesday. Pinkie Pie, Minty, Sweetberry and Rainbow Dash join the rest of their Ponyville friends for 90 minutes of singing, dancing and audience interaction. Show times are 7 p.m. each evening, with a 10:30 a.m. performance on Wednesday only.

"My Little Pony," a favorite toy and cartoon since the early '80s, has been reinvented in a costumed stage show for a new generation. The show, visiting 40 cities while on tour, features familiar tunes such as "I'm a Little Teapot" and soon-to-be favorites "Positively Pink," "Shake Your Cutie" and "You're Cordially Invited."

"This show is a completely different idea and production than I'm used to, and it's more fun than I thought it would be," said Rachel Cori, who portrays "Spike the Dragon." "It's a lot of work, but we get to dance around, have fun and interact with the kids."

Cori's prior performing experience has landed her gigs with "A Chorus Line," "Annie," "Pippin" and "Our Town," and said she has had to fight against her young age and short stature with a strong singing voice in auditions.

The "World's Biggest Tea Party" doesn't go out without a hitch as the ponies realize they can't put the party together by themselves and have to pull together as friends. Children are confronted with important lessons about the true meaning of friendship as the party progresses.

Cori said the show is as much for boys as girls, highlighting the fact that her character, Spike, is a dragon and that dragons might be more relatable to boys.

"We see little girls and little boys at the shows. Everybody loves the tunes, and the boys love Spike," she explained.

Parents also have opportunities to purchase "My Little Pony" merchandise before and after the production.

Ticket prices are $12 and $15. For more information, call (304) 696-4400 or visit any Ticketmaster outlet.
