Monday's Community News: Brenda Lucas
ELECTED: The membership of the County Commissioners' Association of West Virginia elected a Wayne County commissioner as its president during the annual conference conducted in Hancock County. Rick Wellman helps seek legislative reform, facilitate educational programs and resources and assist in communication among county commissions throughout the state.
STRAIGHT 8'S: Elba Ferguson of East Lynn, W.Va., has seen the number "8" many times throughout his life. He was born Aug. 8, 1928; worked as a Wayne County deputy sheriff eight years; served as a crime investigator before retiring in 1987; celebrated his 58th wedding anniversary with wife, Olive, in June; and celebrated his 80th birthday Aug. 8, 2008. Here's hoping that birthday dinner at Chesapeake, Ohio's, Ponderosa was a true treat.
BING: Congratulations to Tim Bing of Huntington -- he won $400 for placing first in the banjo competition during the recent 19th Appalachian String Band Music Festival at Camp Washington-Carver in Clifftop, Fayette County, W.Va. More than 3,500 people attended the festival sponsored by West Virginia Division of Culture and History.
JOINS: Joining the Cabell Huntington Hospital's Department of Pastoral Care is the Rev. Vernon McNear, BCC. The associate director of clinical pastoral education at CHH has a master's of divinity degree from Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Mich. He also has worked in the spiritual care department at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in Idaho.
50 YEARS: What seems like yesterday, Don and Dot Gillette were married 50 years ago. They were honored Aug. 10 with a reception at Camp Mad Anthony Wayne. Congratulations folks -- let's hear it for the Gillettes.
SALE: One person's trash is another person's treasure. The annual trash and treasures rummage sale at Pea Ridge United Methodist Church is from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at 5747 Pea Ridge Road. Be a recycler by donating trash and treasures for the annual sale.
MERITED: The Legion of Merit Award was recently presented to Dr. Eugene Riehle, chief of dental service at VA Medical Center and a retired colonel with the U.S. Army Reserves. The award goes to U.S. Armed Forces members for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements. Dr. Riehle served one tour of duty in Afghanistan and two in Iraq.
QUEEN: Hot dog, Myriah Hisam goes down in history as being the first Hot Dog Festival Queen. She also won in the interview and evening gown competition. Myriah, a Marshall University junior majoring in broadcast journalism and a minor in political science, is the daughter of Gary and Debrah Hisam.
BELATED: Jacob Brammer became a teenager on Aug. 1; as Madison Reed celebrated 2 from becoming a dime at 8. Nora Childers turned 66 on Aug. 12.
